Futurama Episode Review: The Problem with Popplers

Steve Helmer

Synopsis: The crew of the Planet Express discovers a tasty new food on a remote planet and it becomes an immediate hit on Earth. Unfortunately, the food turns out to be the offspring of a hostile alien race.

What I liked about this episode: I think the best part of this episode is the irony. Leela (who originally discovers the "Popplers") starts trying to convince people not to eat them as soon as she discovers they are intelligent but, despite her efforts, is the one the aliens want to seek revenge on.

I also loved the plot to get her out of being killed by the aliens just because it was so silly it couldn't help but be somewhat funny. In fact, I think that ultimately was the thing that won me over most about this episode.

The ending to this episode, with them sitting around the table eating a whole bunch of controversial foods was also pretty funny too. I ended up re-watching that.

What I didn't like about this episode: The ending was a little bit predictable; especially once that protestor/hippy got into the scene. Given the fact this episode was actually pretty clever overall; it would have been nice to see some sort of unexpected twist at the end.

I'm also not a big fan of the character Zapp Brannigan (who gets a little too much time in this episode). I just never found him to be that funny and, as a result, it would have been better if he was more of a background character in this episode.

Final Opinion: It's not the funniest episode of this series, but it was still an entertaining way to spend 30 minutes and I do recommend watching it if you get a chance.
