Future Me; Sending Emails from Me Now to Me in the Future

I heard about future Me (http://www.futureme.org/) last week while looking at the BBC Click Online web-site. I like the Webscape (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/click_online/8282586.stm) page because it sometimes features websites that end up interesting me. Future Me sounded a bit daft and simplistic when I first read about it, but for some reason I decided to give it a go. There was just something fascinating about sending an email from me now to some future me.

The Future Me website looks fairly low tech, but this also means that it is simple to get straight into it. They have an archive of what people have sent to themselves previously; those who have chosen to make their emails public. The idea of the place is simple; you send emails from me now to a me in the future. You write whatever message you want and then pick whatever date you want it delivered; you can choose to have it delivered months or years into the future. You also get to choose if you want your email to be private or anonymously on public display - I selected private. Then it is just a case of verifying your email and you're off.

Although this Future Me sounded so simplistic it quickly became addictive. I sent an email from me now to me in five years time. I talked about what was going on in my life now and what I would like to happen in the future. I made predictions. It felt really therapeutic and a great way to get things off my chest. At the very least it will give me a laugh in the years to come. I think that it will make my day to receive an email from me now at some future date. My memory isn't that great and it will be fascinating to read about what I was thinking about in the past, and seeing if things turned out the way I wanted them to turn out; it will be interesting to see just how wrong me now was.

I created a few emails for future dates, but then had to stop myself. I think that too much of this type of thing would spoil things for me. I did make a few more for certain dates like birthdays and so on. I probably won't go neat it again for a while.
