Futuresport (1998): A Movie Review

Jennifer Sapa
Futuresport is a sci-fi action adventure starring Dean Cain and Wesley Snipes. Dean Cain stars as Tre Ramzey, an arrogant superstar athlete in the year 2025 who has to overcome his ego in order to prevent a war. Wesley Snipes stars as Obike Fixx, the inventor of Futuresport. Vanessa Williams stars an Alex Torres, an investigative report and Tre's ex-girlfriend. Warning: my movie review contains plot spoilers.

Futuresport is not bad for a made for TV movie from 1998 but it is a little boring. I mainly rented it because I am a Dean Cain fan and I usually enjoy his straight to video movies. This one was just average. The move has an average plot, average acting, and a bit of a slow pace. Futuresport is a rip-off of Rollerball but I think the characters in Futuresport are much better then the actors/characters from Rollerball.

The basic storyline is that the world is obsessed with futuresport, a mixture of basketball, handball, and rollerblading. The leagues are run by corporate America and apparently have the ability to decide political fates. Hawaii is trying to secede from the union and rebels keep trying to kill futuresport pro-players for some reason. In order to prevent millions of dying in a war, Tre Ramzey comes up with the brilliant idea of settling the land dispute with a winner take all game of futuresport. Tre proves he isn't just an egocentric athletic, manages to get the girl, and saves the day.

The movie had two main flaws. The first flaw was there weren't enough game time scenes. The move would have been better with more sport scenes and less dialogue scenes between Tre and Alex. The second flaw was the under-utilization of Wesley Snipes. His character had very little screen time and when he finally got to play the game Obike only made one play and then stopped.

Futuresport is just an average B-movie that is good for 90 minutes of mindless entertainment. I give the movie 2 out of 5 stars.
