G4 Television for Gamers... Or is It?

Chris Tidwell
G4 tech TV has long been the leading channel to turn to in order to find out the latest and greatest in gamming innovation. G4 was the place to go to find out what new releases were going to be amazing, and which ones were doomed to fail, to see what new innovations and inventions were re-shaping the gaming industry, to get all the latest news and updates about everything current in technology, but now G4 seems to have sold itself out.

I hardly get a chance to sit and watch TV anymore, but when I do one of my favorite channels was of course G4. I am a gamer and like to get the latest information and such dealing with upcoming releases and events, however when I tuned into G4 I noticed I was watching a show called "Cheaters" but no like cheating in a video game, cheating as in cheating on your spouse. I then selected menu on my television and looked at the programming lined up on G4, and unfortunately I was very disappointed.

G4 Tech TV is now made up of unrelated programming. These shows include the following

The Man Show: a program I find horribly vulgar and demeaning towards woman. This show is like taking the conversations and thoughts of a high school locker room and making them into reality. In one episode they took a group of very beautiful young woman and made them compete in a contest to see which one should be the next "Trampoline Girl" This is not what I would call game related and should not be hosted on G4.

Star Trek and Star Trek the Next Generation: this I can somewhat understand, but really and truly regular cable has enough of both shows airing during the week. I can watch Star Trek on TV land every morning, so why am I paying an extra cable bill to watch it again on G4 when the channel is supposed to be devoted to gaming? I can see where gamers might also be Star Trek fans, but I really don't see the purpose of having hours upon hours scheduled each day!

Cops: Just like Star Track I can see Cops and various spin off versions of this show all over regular cable networks. Here again I ask, what does Cops have to do with gaming? I mean every now and again a video game consul will show up in the run down homes the Cops bust into but overall this show has little to do with gaming as a whole.

Paid Programming: this I understand is how G4 stays around, but while most channels cut their paid programming advertisements at 6 or 7 am G4 let's theirs run until 9am. Aside from the long Paid Programming clips I have to wonder why they need so much of the Paid Programming? I mean they have already cut most of their good programs surrounding the gaming industry and replaced them with programs designed to catch ratings anyways.

There are a few good gaming programs left on G4 like X Play, Cheat, and Cinimatech, but that's about it, and all of them repeat themselves through the week. If you watch X Play review Resident Evil 4 for the Wii on Monday, you can catch it again on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and so on. Each of G4's shows devoted to gaming air a new episode every week and repeat it until the next week, which is a bit ridiculous with the lack of programming devoted to gaming anyways. G4 should really get their act together or change their name, but whatever way you look at it, G4 is no longer a place to get your gaming news and information.

I couldn't agree with you more Chris. I feel the same way as you do about G4. It seems that people just want to make it sleazy and crappy like most television today. I don't watch it much anymore myself except for the shows you watch. I know this may not do much good, but what about getting a petition going to change it back to what G4 should be Gaming TV or take it off the air.
