Yesterday (January 8), a gunman shot Giffords, killed 6 others, and injured as many as 14 others (which includes Giffords) at a Tucson supermarket where the Congresswoman was meeting constituents.
Hernandez is a mere 20-years-old while Giffords' shooter, suspect Jared Loughner, is only 22-years-old and currently in custody. A second suspect has been reported to possibly be linked to yesterday's terrible events.

Hernandez who spoke with ABC's Christine Amanpour today (January 9) explained that even though he was some 30 feet away from Giffords when he heard the shots, his first instinct was to go to her.
Hernandez told Amanpour, "Once I saw that she was down, and there were more than one victim, I went ahead and started doing the limited triage that I could with what I had."

Hernandez is a junior at the University of Arizona and told reporters that he has "limited experience in triage and training." Hernandez said that he lifted Giffords' head up and used smocks from the Safeway Grocery's meat department as bandages.
He also spoke to Gabrielle Giffords, saying,"'Just grab my hand to let me know that you're okay,'" according to ABC's report and Giffords squeezed his hand in response.
