Gadsden State Community College: Free Tuition Through Gadsden Job Corps Center

Yvonne Rodenhiser
The Gadsden Job Corps Center in Gadsden, Alabama gives adolescents between the ages of 16 and 24 the opportunity to attend Gadsden State Community College free of charge. The Gadsden Job Corps Center is funded by the Department of Labor. This program offers underprivileged young adults an opportunity to earn their G.E.D., learn a vocational trade, and preparation for entering the workforce. Gadsden Job Corps gives it's students free room and board, free food, and even spending cash for hygiene items.

You will have to meet certain requirements to enroll in Gadsden Job Corps. As long as you are between the ages of 16 and 24 and your family income is below a set standard, you can get in. Once you enroll into the Gadsden Job Corps program, you will take standardized tests to determine where you stand academically. You will take G.E.D. classes if you do not have your high school diploma and learn a vocational trade.

Gadsden Job Corps pays for your G.E.D. testing fees as well. Once you have earned your G.E.D. and vocational trade certificate of completion, you can apply for the college program. You must have demonstrated excellent academic skills and exceptional behavior to be considered for the Gadsden State Community College program. Gadsden Job Corps is not going to invest it's money into a student that won't earn their degree by flunking or causing fights on campus.

The Gadsden Job Corps Center students who do get accepted into the Gadsden State Community College program have a lot more independence than other Job Corps students. College students have their own dorm and can stay off campus past curfew. Gadsden Job Corps has a set curfew because the Department of Labor is held responsible for their students' safety.

Gadsden Job Corps pays for your tuition, books, meals, and any other Gadsden State Community College fees that may pop up. Transportation is provided so that you will get to class on time. Students taking night classes will have to call the Gadsden Job Corps Security Building for a ride when their class is over. Security is responsible for transporting all of the students on the Job Corps Center, so they tend to forget about the college students schedules. You will often be responsible for calling to remind them that you are waiting for a ride.

Gadsden Job Corps wants it's students to succeed and enter the workforce prepared. Earning a degree from Gadsden State Community College is a big step in the right direction on your career path. The best part is that this program is free of charge, so give Gadsden Job Corps a call at 256-547-6222 and find out if the Gadsden State Community College program is right for you!

I went to Job Corps, it sounds like a good thing but they really don't teach you anything that you don't already know from school. The teacher isn't any good. On many occasions I had to correct the teachers. But most of the times the teachers just sat at their desk and babysat the class or you could say try to keep the class quiet from the Center Director. Seriously think twice about going the Gadsden Job Corps.
