Gain and Maintain Your Employees' Respect

You wonder what they say when they talk about you, and you know they do talk. As a manager, you will often be the subject of conversation among your employees. Hopefully, your workers rave about your performance and are happy with your direction. There are some ways to win over your subordinates if you think there might be an issue with your leadership. Gain the confidence of employees by being a model employee yourself and get the respect you deserve.

Step 1

Listen to your subordinates. They must know you are interested in order to gain their respect. A good manager uses active listening skills suck as repeating what an employee is saying in his own mind and forming what he will say in response while the employee is still speaking. You need to pause and actively consider what has been said by subordinates before you respond.

Step 2

Communicate with subordinates with clear instructions. Employees value managers that give them guidelines so that they will be able to fulfill their job functions without confusion.

Step 3

Model professional behaviors and attitudes at all times. A manager who is a model employee herself will find that subordinates will follow her good habits and respect her.

Step 4

Display full knowledge regarding the work conducted at your business. Know all the components of your job as well as that of your employees. Your workers need to see you are completely competent in all aspects.

Step 5

Ask your subordinates for their ideas regarding the business. A person respects another who values input. Utilize your employee's ideas when possible and give them full credit. Do not micromanage your workers. Show them respect by giving them tasks to do and allow them to complete them on their own. Encourage them to approach you with questions and concerns but do not hover over them.

Always be honest with your employees. There will probably be times when you cannot give them details regarding specific issues but you need to let them know you cannot.
