Game 3 Loss Sign of Future for Lakers, Mavericks

In Other Words, Dallas Wins the Series

Gary Davis
It's hard for a lot of basketball fans to believe but the Los Angeles Lakers dropped the third straight Western semifinal playoff game to the Dallas Mavericks, 98-92. To say the Lakers are in disarray is an understatement. To say that Los Angeles will lose the series is accurate.

Jaime Aron has posted an article at the Los Angeles Lakers' website titled "Dirk, Peja help Mavs put Lakers on brink of KO."

The "Dirk" that Aron is alluding to is of course Dallas superstar Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki had 32 points and nine rebounds to lead the Mavericks.

There are a number of keys to this series to explore.

The Lakers are in turmoil. They are not playing well as a team and rather than work it out have chosen to pass the blame.

Ron Artest was not allowed to play in Game 3 due to a flagrant foul. This not only put the Lakers in a tough position for personnel but it gave Dallas extra motivation and, it further divided Los Angeles.

The Mavericks remember being up 2-0 in the NBA Finals in 2006 and losing.

If you refer to Aron's comments or if you have been following the Lakers you know that the underlying problem is that the Lakers have not been "finishing." They controlled the tempo and score in Games One and Three and yet Dallas came from behind in both and won.

There is one possibility that hasn't been brought up. Isn't it possible that the Dallas Mavericks are just the better team this year? The proof is in the pudding. Sometimes because of talent teams win early in the season and get a better record. However through the season other teams come together and when the two play one another then we truly see who the better team is.

I think that is the case here. If you listen to Nowitzki you hear someone talking about the pride in the Lakers' locker room and it must be taken. The Lakers don't seem to have that same battling spirit.

It should be remembered that no team has ever come back from a 3-0 record in the playoffs--Los Angeles will not be the first.
