'Game Change' Meant to Stop Sarah Palin Campaign that Didn't Happen

Mark Whittington

COMMENTARY | Conservatives4Palin has a story about the upcoming HBO movie "Game Change" based on the John Heilemann and Mark Halperin book which was an account of the 2008 election that brought Barack Obama to the presidency.

The HBO version apparently does not deal with the Obama campaign, judging correctly that it is too depressing for even HBO viewers to watch. Instead it is a smear job on Sarah Palin, that year's Vice Presidential nominee. The material with which Palin is being smeared is based on sources within the McCain campaign who were eager to shift the blame for the campaign's failure away from themselves and onto Palin. The portrait drawn of Palin has about as much resemblance to the real woman as "The Secret History" of Procopius of Caesaria has to the real Empress Theodora.

When "Game Change" was greenlit, Palin was still considering a run for the presidency. Obama's supporters in Hollywood, many of whom are involved in the HBO movie, were clearly very keen to prevent a Palin presidency from happening. The movie is scheduled to premiere in March, right in the middle of primary season. Unfortunately for the people behind the movie, Palin is not running this year and so the exercise was pointless.

It is entertaining to imagine an alternate universe in which Palin was running. One can imagine her winning Iowa, where she is popular, losing New Hampshire to Romney, and then having a blowout in South Carolina. At that point Romney would have tried to snuff Palin out with the multimillion dollar barrage of campaign commercials that he used in the real world to give Newt Gingrich a thumping.

However there would have been two differences. A full-throated attack on Palin by Romney would have had every potential for backfiring. Rush Limbaugh has a maxim that in politics it is very difficult to beat up on the girl because we are taught that is not something that is done. Also Palin, who has been called every name imaginable, would have dealt with the negative campaigning better. In other words, unlike Gingrich, she might have won in Florida.

And then "Game Change" rolls around depicting Palin as a ditz, a nut, and a diva. In the alternate universe, with Palin getting ready to roar through Super Tuesday like Boudicca through Londinium, the viewership of the movie would have been much greater than it is likely to be in the real world.

But one wonders with what result? Most people discount what Hollywood has to say about politics and political figures; the entertainment industry has a well earned reputation of being the cockpit of left-wing lunacy. Indeed, Palin might well turn it to her advantage, turning the caricature of "Game Change" into a talking point and a fund-raising tool. If the Hollywood Left is so afraid of her, she would have said, what better reason to vote for her.

Oh, for what might have been!

Governor Palin is just the nicest person...ever. If America could just meet her in person, they would surely change their minds about her qualifications. If they only knew how truly remarkably bright she really is, the voters of our great country would simply fall in love with her. There is no candidate with loftier morals and character than Sarah. Everything she does or decides is based on whether or not it is best for our nation. She has a wonderful family with impecable family values and character. She is patient and sees things through until they are completely finished unlike democrats who never finish anything. She knows a lot about foreign countries and would be the best negotiator with these skills of any candidates running or who currently resides in the White House. Everybody who knows her says that she would make the best president, but there are lots of people who don't know her so well who hold rather slight doubts about her keen leadership skills. She is a fantastic debater because she studies hard and is certain of her facts before she presents them unlike the other candidates who usually stumble over matters of geography or world events. Sarah Palin also knows a lot about our govenment and how it operates better than the rest of the candidates who usually don't know didley squat about anything in government. The best thing about Sarah Palin is that she is usually "the expert" in the room about everything that is being said....even when others have no idea of what they are talking about. One just can't say enough nice things about this American political genius. Who could possibly argue against her being president?....afterall one just has to admit that she is the most qualified of all. Now come on...all of you know in your heart that she should be president...now all that's left now is for all of you to ........"admit it".

This writer lives in an alternate universe where SP is concerned. Wake up and join the real world. This woman only appeals to people who live in an alternate universe.

Palin is being "smeared"? Funny stuff, especially in an article which is one lone smear.

Palin's actions R apparent sociopathy. Read "The Sociopath Next Door: The Ruthless Versus the Rest of Us," by M. Stoudt, Ph.D., Crown, 2005. Palin plays the victim (her "Blood Libel"), is unable to accept blame ( she has never taken responsibility for anything), has cost livelihoods of others who she feels have crossed her, lies (see Politifact for a few of her lies), rules are for others but not for her (she castigates others for similar behaviours she has done in the past), she feels she is deserving of special favors (air flights for her family members is one example--she had to pay back money to the state of Alaska for those), rules are for others, but not for her--let slide taxes on chalets far out in AK countryside until someone found out, and using others, including family, as tools--who can forget the pics of the child named Trig carried around like a loaf of bread, including one of him shoeless and hatless in 40 degree weather. Game Change is spot on.
