Game Night

Lisa R. Strong
Every Saturday night;
We would gather round;
Our old kitchen table;
To play a family game;
Sometimes it was checkers;
Or we would play cards;
Canasta, hearts and pinnacle;
Until the break of day;
Long before videogames;
Years before computers;
My mom taught me how to play;
Chess, dominoes and backgammon;
Sometimes we would play board games;
Sometimes I would buy Kentucky Avenue;
Or I would go directly to jail;
Sometimes I would be sent home;
Or I would win at the game of Life;
Bedtime was the end for us;
Or when my stepdad got too drunk;
I still love to play games;
But it was more fun back then;
I miss the laughter;
Yet games still make me smile;
They always help me to remember.

    Well, that was my first thought...then I thought-no, that can't be-that is too obvious...I do know how fond some poets are of putting riddles into their poems...That is why I am a mediocre chess player...I don't want to think that hard to have fun.

    Well if you are talking about the game of "Life" my friend, I can tell you one thing-I have been playing it for nearly a half a century, and I still suck at it...I know that I will never make it to "Millionaire Acres," but I would appreciate it if I could just stay out of the poorhouse!!! Lmbo!!!
