Game Purp & Patron Mixtape Review

Can Los Angeles Rapper Game Revive His Career with a New Mixtape?

The Reviewer
Los Angeles rapper Game formerly known as The Game is back on the scene with his newest mixtape Purp & Patron. It has been almost three years since Game's last album LAX. Since then his upcoming album The R.E.D. Album has suffered from a myriad of release dates and failed singles. To get his buzz back in the music industry he released his two disc mixtape Purp & Patron. Will Purp & Patron be able to solidify Game back to an elite status in the hip hop game?

Purp & Patron opens with L.A. Times produced by Ervin "E.P." Pope. The track has the west coast laid back style which lets Game shine as an artist.

Soft Rhodes features Ashanti and production from Dr. Dre. The track is one of the stand out tracks on the album and features a simple almost hypnotic melody.

Fabolous joins Game on Ferrari Lifestyle produced by D.A. Dorman. The track features one of the smoothest beats in recent memory. The production almost outshines strong verses from both Game and Fabolous.

Ashes To Ashes features Rick Ross and features strong production and solid delivery from both lyricists. Game comes with a totally different flow on the track as well.

Lil Wayne joins Game on the Bink produced Soo Woo. Wayne definitely delivers a string of punchlines but his crooning at the end brings the track down.

T-Pain is featured on Khaki Suit. The track is not one of the standout efforts on Purp & Patron. The beat is very minimalist and repetitive.

Rap legends Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane and KRS One are featured on History. The track will definitely show that the legends of hip hop respect Game's artistry. Big Daddy Kane still seems as current as ever twenty years past his mainstream success.

The Che Vicious produced Taylor Gang features Wiz Khalifa. The production on the track is top notch and both rappers deliver strong verses.

Sure to be one of the most talked about tracks on the mixtape is The Ocean featuring brief cameos from Dr. Dre and Busta Rhymes. The track is co-produced by Dr. Dre and Che Vicious. The song is definitely not what you expect from Game as it has a tropical island feel instead of the grittier tracks you expect from him.

In My '64 is produced by Pharrell and features Pharrell and Snoop Dogg. Pharrell delivers one of the weaker tracks on the mixtape which is definitely disappointing.

187 features incarcerated rapper Lil Boosie. The track is more in line with what you expect from Game. The song might not be one of the best tracks on the mixtape but it is definitely one of the harder tracks.

Purp & Yellow is a remix of Wiz Khalifa's Stargate produced hit single Black & Yellow. On the remix they keep Wiz Khalifa on the hook and there is a new verse from Snoop Dogg along with Game. Instead of paying tribute to the Pittsburg Steelers, Game and Snoop pay homage to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Can A Drummer Get Some is the first single off of Blink 182's drummer Travis Barker's new album. The track features Swizz Beatz, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross along with Game. The song is a throwback to the whole rap-rock era of the early 2000's.

Favorite DJ Remix is a Clinton Sparks track produced by DJ Green Lantern and featuring Jim Jones, Bun-B along with Game. The song is highlighted by Game's rapid fire delivery and solid production.

Purp & Patron features more high profile production and features than most artists' albums. It is hard to believe that Game let go of all these songs on a free project instead of putting them on The R.E.D. Album. The mixtape is definitely one of the better mixtapes of the past few years and should help solidify Game's position back in the music game. Overall Purp & Patron gets 8 out of 10.
