Game Show Question: What's the Best Compliment?

Of These Three, Which Would You Most like to Hear?

Elizabeth V. Miller
I've previously discussed my unhealthy and on-again, off-again relationship with game shows in a Best Bad Answers piece which I posted back in June. I'm not re-obsessed with my past addiction, but one question from a clip I watched months ago still plagues me. It was posed on Tatlletales, an old game show featuring celebrity couples, and I just don't know how I should respond if the question were directed at me.

The Million Dollar Question (Except it was Really Only Worth $100)

"Out of a choice of three compliments, which would you most like to hear?" Host Bert Convy went on to give the following options:

(1) "A man says, 'You're one of the most attractive women I've ever met.'"

(2) "A woman says, 'You're the best friend any woman could have.'"

(3) "A child says, 'I wish all mommies could be like you.'"

Answers from the Celebrity Panelists

Game show royalty Betty White and Allen Ludden were panelists that day. Ludden correctly guessed Betty would prefer the compliment from a man, but jested a number four option from a dog would have topped the list for his animal-lover of a wife. Another panelist Bill Cullen also guessed right that his wife would most like to hear something coming from a fellow.

Chuck Woolery was the only panelist who ran into problems, quickly dismissing the third option on the basis that the couple had no children. As it turned out, his wife Joann Pflug had recently watched a touching movie featuring a young boy and was still smitten by the little tyke.

Which is the Best Compliment?

I don't know: it just doesn't seem like any of the options are all that great. "Attractive" in this context isn't striking me as a weighted combination of intelligence, personality, and physical looks. But, if you don't opt for the first pick, which could you even choose out of the other two?

I usually cringe when I hear a person going on and on about a "best friend" who's always there to do everything with. That seems really boring. But, I'm not a mother and I think Chuck Woolery had it right: hoping for a mommy-compliment as a non-mother seems odd.

As you can tell, I'm sincerely perplexed by this important and complicated dilemma. I have a hunch that at some point I'll be in a life-or-death situation and need to know the answer to this question. But, I just can't commit to any of the three choices.

I don't really think any of the choices is that imaginative; doesn't it depend on context? (For example, when I taught in a poverty-ridden city school, there's was no higher compliment than "That's bangin'!") Were I a woman, I certainly wouldn't mind saying something, then hearing back, "That was really well-put...and has anyone ever told you that you're drop-dead and rot gorgeous?"

I pick 3!Looks can change in an instant, friends can also change justlike that right before your eyes, however, once you're a mom, you're always a mom, and for a child to say that, just makes you feel so good!

I don't think I want to be an attractive woman or a mommy, but if I had the choice of an attractive man or great dad, then I'll go with great dad.

It would be a toss up between the first and second options. The first one is a bit of a giveaway that I like to receive compliments on my appearance. But then again, I always feel flattered when a friend tells me what a great friend I am. So can I have both?!
