When 'Joshua' asked this question to David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) in the 1983 movie "WarGames," dialing in to a computer to play a game was not something commonly done. Today, things have changed. It is now commonplace for people to go onto the internet with the purpose of playing games. There are several sites available to us that cater to this very pastime, offering both free and downloadable versions of games. These websites include Pogo.com, MSN Games, and Yahoo!Games. All of these have similar offerings with their own little hooks designed to keep you on their site playing games - the longer you stay, the more revenue they earn from advertisers.
Recently, I stumbled on a site that was a little different - Winster.com
Playing Games at Winster.com
One way that this site is unique is that it does not offer the standard fare that the other sites offer. You will not find Bejeweled, Word Whomp, or YATC (yet another tetris clone) at Winster.com. What you will find are games called Chain Gang, Doku Deluxe, Poker Pals, and other games that are designed to be both simple to learn and fun to play. Additionally, these games are played co-operatively with up to four other players.
All of the games function on the same principle - you attempt to complete a puzzle by 'spinning' for pieces or trading pieces with other players. Points are awarded for successful completion of a puzzle. Spins can result in a puzzle piece, a point award, or additional spins. While each game offers different ways to win points, point won in any game are added to your total point tally. Points are later exchanged for prizes.
How It Works
Similar to other game sites, Winster.com in funded in part by advertisements on the website. While playing, both free and paid members view advertisements. Free members will also take occasional commercial breaks while playing.
Memberships are offered in four levels:
Free - Free members are awarded 200 spins each day that they log in to play.
Basic - Basic members are awarded 300 spins per day that they log in to play. Basic membership is $4.99 per month.
Silver - Silver members are awarded 500 spins per day that they log in to play. Silver membership is $7.49 per month.
Gold - Gold members are awarded 800 spins per day that they log in to play. Gold membership is $9.99 per month.
Paid members are awarded four times the points that free members get for completing the same puzzles. As well, paid members can accumulate spins (up to ten times the daily allotment), while free players lose unused daily spins.
Because of the co-operative play, playing games on Winster.com is a fun way to meet new people. If you enjoyed playing with some one, you can make them a friend and locate them the next time you play. Similar to social networking sites like Yuwie.com, Winster.com allows you to create a profile so that people can get to know as much (or as little) about you as you want.
I have had a lot of fun playing for prizes at Winster.com. Already, I have exchanged my points for a Netflix subscription. Currently, I am working towards a new 8.1 megapixel digital camera - though I may opt for an Amazon.com gift certificate!
Why not join me at Winster.com?

Lots of complaints about this site. Stick with the free games. They have no morals and their customer service is awful.

No, Winster is not a scam. They are a legit gaming site. If you have problems getting, as I have, you should email them. They have a link in the help section. I no longer have problems and play every day.
