Games for Kids Using Socks

Jolynne M Hudnell
If your home is like mine, you have more socks than you know what to do with. This includes the various unmatched socks kept in a bag waiting for the match to appear. You can temporarily find a purpose for socks and keep kids amused at the same time. Following are some ideas of games for kids using socks.

Sock Grab. This is actually a familiar party game for kids but can be played when the kids are bored. Put a bunch of socks in a pike with the kids sitting around. When it's time to start, the kids try to put on as many socks as they can over top of the others. When time runs out, whoever is wearing the most socks wins.

Sock Steal. The purpose of this kids' game is to take the socks off the other kids. When it's time to start, each child tries to steal the socks off of the other kids' feet. As each child becomes barefoot, they are out. The last child remaining with a sock is the winner. Multiple socks can be worn to prolong the game, with the rule that only one sock can be stolen at a time. There is a potential for some horseplay, so guidelines should be made and enforced.

The following games for kids using socks require the socks to be thrown, so should be done outside or in a room where nothing can be broken. To make a sock ball, fold the sock over an inch or two starting at the toe, and continue folding all the way up until you can fold the open end around the "rolled up" part. The smaller the folds, the harder the sock ball will be.

Target Practice. This sock game is similar to cornhole. Take a large, sturdy piece of cardboard and cut out a few holes slightly larger than the sock balls. Let the kids decorate the cardboard with markers or paints for an extra activity. Then prop the cardboard up at an angle and let the kids try to toss the socks into the holes. For smaller kids you may want to make the holes a lot larger than the sock balls.

Kock 'em, Sock 'em. In a safe area, line up some lightweight objects, such as empty milk jugs or small boxes waiting to be recycled. You can use any light object that won't break. Let the kids throw the sock balls to try to knock down the objects.

One last suggestion for games for kids using socks:

Helpful Pairings. Although this isn't really a game, you can make it seem that way so kids can have fun while helping you at the same time. If you keep your mismatched socks in a bag or other container to try to match up on another day, why not let the kids help? Dump out all the mismatched socks into a pile. When it's time to start, have the kids try to match as many pairs of socks as they can. They can keep their matches in their own pile. Once as many socks are paired as possible, the game is over. Let the kids see who can make the most matched pairs.

Games for Kids using Socks. When you're kids are bored there are many ways they can be occupied. Something as simple as footwear can be a fun way to pass the time. Try some of these ideas or make up your own games for kids using socks.
