Just because the whole night seems to be centered around the big countdown doesn't mean you can't have a little fun while you're waiting, right?
Resolutions:
One of the most classic games for New Year's Eve, this game is great if you're with a large group of people; just write down quite a few generic resolutions, for example 'I resolve to lose weight', or 'I resolve to take more photos' - things that aren't very specific.
Now, cut these phrases into strips and fold into squares, and place them in a hat, or large bag - something that people can't see through.
Tell people to draw a two pieces of paper out the hat each - they then have to decide on one to keep for themselves, and one to give someone else - it can be anyone round the circle, so it's obviously better if it's a group of people that know each other well!
Who's In the Bag?
You may have already seen this on toy store's shelves around the world, but if you don't want to buy the store version, I suggest making your own - just cut up some small pieces of card, and write about three famous people's names (that the people playing are going to know, obviously!) on each card, making about thirty cards in total.
Now, place these cards into a hat / bag, and simply take turns to pull some out with your friends - whoever pulls out the card has to describe one of the three celebrities on it, and everyone else has to try and guess who they're describing. If someone guesses correctly, the person who was doing the describing gets to keep the card; set a timer up, so that they have to try and get as many cards as possible in the time limit.
The person with the most cards at the end wins.
Variation! Why not try writing the names of people you work with, if you're having colleagues over, instead of celebrities?
Celebrity Resolutions:
OK, so, for this game, all you need is a couple of magazines, or celebrity photos, and an imagination.
Simply cut celebrity photos out, and pin them to a notice board, or blu-tac them to the wall, and take turns to write up some new year's resolutions for each celebrity (e.g for Britney Spears, you might put 'I resolve to grow my hair back', or something of the like).
This game's a good laugh, and it's great for most ages - if you're playing with children, why not put some Disney characters up there, too?
Anyway, those are my top three games to play on New Year's Eve - they're not age specific, so any sneaky teenagers who've managed to stay up can have some fun, too - after all, holidays are all about family, right?
