Gaming in the San Diego Area: Indian Casinos Serve Up Vegas Style Action

You love the gaming excitement of Las Vegas. The slots, poker, blackjack and more, but you don't love that long dreary drive through the dessert. Well, for all you folks living in Southern California the perfect solution for you are any one of the exciting casinos in the San Diego County area.

There are five casinos all so close together you could actually go "casino hopping" and visit all of them in one day. These five casinos are: Pechanga, Pala, Pauma, Harrah's Rincon, and Valley View. All these casinos offer some great gaming and even more. Let's explore each in further detail.

Pechanga Casino is located in Temecula, CA in the heart of the wine country and very conveniently off the 15 freeway. This casino offers all the gaming action your heart desires and a hotel. They are a 4 diamond rated resort, and I've personally stayed in their one bedroom suites. They are beautiful and spacious. Pechanga also offers golfing, and shopping at 3 gift shops located throughout the casino compound.

The games offered include: slots from .01 cent up to $100.00, blackjack, keno, poker (live and video), baccarat, and video roulette. If you need a break from the games you can check out the spa or one of their many restaurants. They have a buffet, a 24-hour café, The Seafood Grotto, The Great Oak (steakhouse), Paisano's Italian, Blazing Noodles, Kelsey's (a sports-like bar and grill), and even a full food court.

I've dined at all the restaurants and I have to say hands-down my personal favorite for food quality is at Kelsey's. The menu is very varied. There are appetizers, salads, sandwiches, steaks, ribs, chicken, fish and more. I have *never*been disappointed with the quality of the food and the way it's prepared at Kelsey's.

If you're looking for ambiance, The Great Oak Steak House would be great for a romantic dinner and the food is very high quality. However, I have had a couple of issues in the past with the food not being cooked correctly, especially the salmon. They tend to cook it on the rare side (at least that's been my experience). So, be sure to tell the server how you want your fish cooked, if you order the salmon.

My worst experiences were at Paisano's and the 24 hour café. I would not suggest eating at either of these locations. Either leave and eat somewhere else or if the food court is still open, go there for a meal. Most nights the food court is open until 10pm and the Hamburger place is open all night, as is the coffee/pastry location.

Pechanga also has a 1200 seat showroom where they offer big name entertainment. There's a club called Silk that just recently reopened, so if you like dancing this is the place to check out. Another lounge to check out is Eagle Nest; the rooftop club. It's very relaxing and offer live music. It's open Wednesday through Sunday. The Cabaret Lounge offers live music some nights, no cover and even karaoke on Monday and Tuesday nights.

I highly suggest if you're going to do any gambling you join their rewards program. It's free and every time you sit at a slot machine, just put your card into the machine. This will track your play. As you play you'll accumulate points. The more points you earn the more rewards you'll earn. You'll earn comp dollars, easy play dollars and you'll start to get offers mailed to you for discounted or free rooms, invitations to events like slot tournaments, blackjack tournaments and more.

Next on our casino hopping journey is Pala Casino. Leave Pechanga and West down Pechanga Road to Pala Road and go about 7 miles and you'll see Pala to the right. It's about 8 miles from Pechanga.

This is another full service casino and hotel. The hotel offers everything from standard rooms to suites. There is a bounty of restaurants to choose from for your dining pleasure. I must say their restaurant selections very closely mirror the options at Pechanga. These include: Choices, the buffet, The Oak Room (a steak house), Mama's Cucina Italiana, Noodles, and Pala Café. There are some additional options that are a bit different than those at Pechanga: Amigo's, Sushi Saki, Promenade Deli and Café Amore.

As far as gaming action, here too you'll find all the games you've come to love from Las Vegas. There's a big selection of slots, table games like blackjack, baccarat, and more, plus poker (live and video). You'll definitely find your favorite games here at Pala.

If you want to add a little entertainment to your visit be sure to visit the Center Bar. The entertainment is always free, and behind the performers is an area to sit that's set up like sofas and big lounge chairs. In addition to free entertainment Pala offers big name entertainment like Julio Iglesias, Tony Bennett, Engelbert Humperdinck, and many others.

If you're feeling a little wilted from all this gambling and driving, then you might want to check out their day spa. They offer all types of therapeutic and relaxation massages. Be sure to call before you go, as appointment times tend to sell out quickly, especially on the weekends.

Next stop: Pauma Casino. Pauma is a smaller casino in comparison with the rest of the casinos on our casino hopping adventure. Pauma is actually still in a tent. However, to look at the structure you'd never know it's a tent, but it is. Plus it offers no hotel. Another unique point about this casino is that you do NOT need to be 21 to gamble at this location. If you're 18 years old or over, you are welcome to try your hand with Lady Luck.

Pauma offers all the gaming action like the other casinos including slots, table games, and poker (both live and video). They have a small restaurant called Pauma Bay Café. There's always some good deal being offered. Currently you can get 2 prime rib dinners for $15.00 from 5pm to 9pm. Not a bad deal to feed two people. However, my weakness is sweets and their deli offers the most delicious cakes I've ever tasted anywhere. You can order the cakes at least 24 hours in advance and buy a whole one to take home. They'll make you very popular at your next office birthday celebration.

The Red Parrot Lounge offers free entertainment and live entertainment on the weekends (Friday and Saturday). It's a nice lounge to visit, if you're looking to rest your fingers from pressing buttons or your wallet from doling out cash.

Now that we've explored Pauma let's head up the road a bit to Harrah's Rincon. This casino is another casino that offers a Las Vegas feel, and this casino offers another great benefit. They too offer a rewards program, only since this is a Harrah's property any rewards earned here can be used at *ANY* Harrah's owned property across the country. So, the next time you go to Las Vegas all the points you earned at Rincon can be redeemed at Bally's , Caesar's, Rio or any other Harrah's location. This holds true for any location in the USA.

Harrah's Rincon is a good sized casino without being overwhelming in size. They offer all the games you've come to know and love, including live poker and video poker.

Their hotel offers some of the nicest rooms and suites I've ever encountered anywhere. I love the layout of their rooms, and the bathrooms have very nice tubs that are great to relax in while having a glass of wine. Further relaxation can be found in their day spa. It's very luxurious and everyone will treat you like royalty.

If you're feeling hungry, there are plenty of options. A great buffet with many food choices, Cabana Cove is a laid back dining experience overlooking the pool area, Corner Grill offering deli favorites, Fiore; offering steak and seafood; Fortune's, offering Asian cuisine, and the San Luis Rey Café which is open 24 hours per day for your dining pleasure.

Rincon offers several entertainment venues like the Eclipse Nightclub, which offers entertainment out by the pool. There's the Open Sky Theater, which offers big name entertainment like Hall & Oates, Vince Gil, Alice Cooper, and many others. There's definitely something for everyone here at Harrah's Rincon.

Our last stop in our casino hopping journey is Valley View Casino. This casino (and soon to be hotel) is about 4 miles up the road from Harrah's Rincon. I love this casino because I tend to be a "cheap" gambler. They offer tons of penny slot machines, a very generous rewards program, and the BEST buffet I've ever eaten at outside of Las Vegas.

Their buffet includes lobster, crab, and sushi every night of the week. The buffet is award winning in the San Diego area. In addition to the excellent seafood there's every type of food you can imagine. On any given night you'll find baked chicken, prime rib, steak, chops, assorted vegetables, Italian specialties, and deserts to die for. There are other dining choices at Valley View, but my number one suggestion for dining is the buffet.

Once you sign-up for their reward card you'll get a free buffet for lunch or dinner, however lobster is served at the dinner buffet only (which I HIGHLY suggest). You'll also get "free" money and other rewards. So, be sure to always use your card when playing any of the games, whether at the slots or the tables.

Valley View offers concerts in an outdoor venue. Some big names perform at Valley View including the Gypsy Kings, The Beach Boys, REO Speedwagon, and many others.
