Gap Twin Towers T-Shirt

Jesse Schmitt

So we are all trying to capitalize off of the terror of some radical extremists, the lackadaisical behavior of our federal government and the tragedy for the rest of the world. But this 9/11 Tenth Anniversary has gotten a little out of control. For everyone's weekly magazine cover Newsweek and Businessweek were the first to come out with their awesome 9/11 covers. There is even a Facebook page imploring all the magazine editors to show only the American Flag on the cover of their magazines for 9/11/11. That's not likely to happen, but anyone can make a Facebook page about anything.

Even with all this glam-corporate consumerism trying to sell commemorative magazine covers; one of the biggest offenders remains Gap. Their newest release Twin Towers t-shirt shows American's favorite retail company with such a decided move beneath the udders of American consumers; I don't even really know what to say about it.

Gap retail clothier has a new shirt which you'll soon see on every little poser body from the East End to East Los Angeles, if you haven't already. The T-shirt is an anonymous, blurry image which is so obviously meant as an homage to the Twin Towers because the image depicts two towers on the Lower Manhattan skyline. It is not even close to coincidental how this shirt has hit the shelves at the end of August! What are the chances?

Maybe the worst thing about these shirts isn't the blatant consumerism or the gross marginalization of the tragedy of our generation. That's bad. But what's worse is what is on the collar of these All American T-shirts.

I'm not a big nationalism type guy but even I have my thresholds for decency. The fact that these Gap Twin Towers T-shirts are positing themselves to be as All-American as apple pie and baseball and that they have printed on the collar "MADE IN VIETNAM" makes me shake my head in disbelief. Really? Vietnam?

While I'm all about the Gaps too cool for school attitude and while I do wear their clothes, you would figure that this poser east coast company from San Francisco could at the very least put some domestic clothiers to work in making these things. This is a big All-American moment for the Gap; the least they could do is involve some level of All-American creation before they take the shirts worldwide to all their stores.

Of course the almighty dollar trumps all concerns. The world keep spinning and all the meatheads from Seattle to South Beach feel like they're doing their duty to God and our country by wearing these mysterious Twin Towers t-shirts.
