Garage Sales: The Best Tips for a Successful Sale

Ann-Marie Walker
I grew up with garage sales being a huge part of my life. My mother is actually dubbed the "garage sale queen." Her garage sales were always the best ranking sales of the neighborhood. She has graciously passed down to me, the best tips for having a successful garage sale. If you follow these simple tips, your next garage sale will be a winner.

Price It Right: Your Getting Paid to Get Rid of Clutter

The right price is important. No one wants to pay retail at garage sales. Think of a garage sell as if someone is paying you to de clutter your home. Wow think of that! Every little item you sell is less clutter that leads to a better organized home. Your spring cleaning and making money to do it too! When you think of it this way, you really want your items to sale. Keep it cheap! What are you going to do with what is left anyway. More than likely you are going to give it away for free. It is "all in the pennies" I like to say. Every little bit adds up. You will be surprised. Remember your piggy bank as a kid? It was all change, but it sure did add up when it came time to cash it in.

Junk: Throw it Away

The term is garage sale not garbage sale. If it is ripped, torn, stained, or broken, throw it away. Setting out junky items in your sale will only turn off customers.

Tables Make it Easy and Neat

All your items should be on a table. It makes it easier for buyers to find things. It also gives a neat and organized appearance. Here is an easy way to make a table. Place all your empty boxes or totes together. Throw a sheet over the top of them. Now you have a ready made table.

Organize and Keep it Clean

Put all like items together. You should have a separate table for glassware, games, clothes and etc. Have a separate table for men's, women's and children's clothing. Make sure all your items are clean and odor free. No one wants smelly clothes and dirty glassware.

Label

You should attach signs to the clothing tables. Let buyers know what size clothing are located on that table. When your marking the price on your clothes, be sure to add the size on the price tag too.

The More the Merrier

Do not forget to invite family and friends to bring over their unwanted items to sale too. A garage sale with many different items attract more buyers.

Advertise

You have to advertise to attract buyers. Place an add in your local paper. On the Internet craigslist and yahoo garage sale groups in your area, are a great free way to advertise too. If your town allows it, place yard sale signs on busy corners. Use arrows on your signs to point buyers in the right direction. Draw attention to your home. Place flags or balloons infront of your house. If you live near a grade school be sure to place signs near the school. Every morning tons of parents take their children to school.

When you use these simple tips your garage sale will be a great success. I have used these same tips many times and have always had a successful garage sale.
