Garage Sales Vs. EBay - Which One is Better?

Kevin Smith
Selling and trading items that you no longer use or no longer need, is a good way to clear cluttered space and make some quick cash. Some of us do this solely for the purpose of needing quick money. At any rate, there are dozens of ways you can sell your things for quick money. The first two that come to mind are garage sales and eBay. Each of them have their pro's and cons. Here we will compare the two to see which one works best for you.

The first thing that we think about when it comes to selling something that we own, is how much money we can get for it. The more money we can get for it, the better. Garage sales are usually not a good place to sell something that you want to get the most money that you possibly can get for it. Many times when you hold a garage sale, you are selling to people who are looking for flee market like bargains. So, even though you are selling nice things that originally cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars, people aren't even going to want to pay you half of its actual worth. On eBay, your trading with people just like yourself and eBay buyers will pay a lot more for something than people that come to your garage sale will. The main advantage of a garage sale is the amount of time you may have to wait to receive your cash.

At a garage sale, you get your money as soon as the buyer takes the item. You don't have to wait for your money whatsoever. When it comes to eBay you either have to wait for your check or money order to come in the mail, or for paypal to release the funds to you. Paypal will sometimes put a hold on payments that came from eBay auctions to protect the buyer. The hold is released in 21 days, upon them being able to confirm that the buyer received their item, or when you're eBay account has received positive feedback from that buyer. So for those who need cash immediately, a garage sale will be a better option for you, but as mentioned earlier, you will not get nearly as much money for your item at a garage sale as you can get for it on eBay.

Over the years people tend to collect things that end up in a box or in a corner somewhere collecting dust. Making money off of these types of items can be very lucrative depending on what avenues you choose to sell them. EBay has its advantages as well as garage sales. Selling your items on eBay can get you a lot more money than that of a garage sale. Selling items at a garage sale can get you quick money that you don't have to wait for whatsoever. Depending on if you need more money or fast money, will determine which one of these options will be better for you.

Don't forget that customer service, friendliness, and respect still go a long way when it comes to making the sale. Just because it's stuff coming out of your garage doesn't mean people don't want to be treated like they are shopping at a store. Engage them in conversation, comment on what they are looking at or buying, compliment them, and so on. Just like in any selling environment, having an edge always helps make the sale.
