Garage Sales and Ways to Make Them Great

Teresa (Tracey) Stanisha
When you are planning a garage sale you will want to look through all the things that you own. Remember you do not want to sell something that you think you might need in the future. That is always disappointing to have parted with something for some money and then wish you had kept it for yourself. As you are going through your things be sure to box the items that you wish to sell and keep them in a certain place. Label the boxes so that you know just where they are when you need. You can also get creative and make displays. For example, if you have four stuffed animals try putting them in a basket with some candy and selling it as a ready made gift. It works and people will buy it.

Having a community garage sale is a wonderful way to get several families in an area involved in the sale. This can turn into an all day event or a weekend long event for fun for everyone. Yes, there is a lot of work involved, but if you make money and have fun it is something that you will always remember.

In order to draw attention to the garage sale it is important to find as many places to advertise in your area. There are several that do not charge money, so make sure that you find them all and put ads in with them. You will also need to make sure that you have plenty of good signs so that people will see them.

A great way to draw traffic to your garage sale is to give something away for free. For example, you could give every patron a free glass of lemonade to entice them to shop around and see what all you have to sell. You could also give away free snacks or cookies, too. This will help to get people to stop. Once they are there they will most likely buy something.

When you are preparing for your garage sale make sure that you price things correctly. You want the people to believe it is a bargain. The items are used and you can't command the same price as the stores, so make sure that you give them a good price and that you label the items well.

It is important to have a change drawer or till that you keep coins in. Another tip is to keep your bills on your person, just in case there are any problems. Some people divide up the proceeds to all the different people involved. It is probably a better idea to have everyone keep track of their own money, because they know how they priced things and which things are theirs. It is easier to worry about your own than everyone's.

You might want to have your friends and family that take part in the garage sale stay for a picnic or hot dog roast. This can be a lot of fun. Make a bonfire and have everyone bring a dish and enjoy a full day of making money and fun.
