If you need to dispose of household items that do not fall into the category of "regular" trash, it is possible to do that, as long as you follow some basic rules. If you do and the items are placed on the curb by 7 a.m. of your regular garbage pick-up day, Royal Oak sanitation workers will remove it.
Items that can be disposed of include carpeting and padding, as long as it is rolled up and fastened securely with either duct tape or twine and is no longer than 4 feet and does not exceed 40 pounds. Other items can also be removed. You can see a list of them and the regulations by visiting http://www.ci.royal-oak.mi.us/portal/departments/public-service/refuse.
