Garden Decorating Ideas

Tammy Lee Morris
In the summer, having a garden that is beautiful and inviting creates a draw to be outside. Enjoying the fresh air and the view of flowers and wildlife from my garden is one of my favorite parts of summer. Adding decorations to my flower garden allows me to personalize and add elements that I enjoy and reflect my personality.

Decorating in the Garden: Solar Lights

I'll admit it, I love solar lights. Today, there is such a variety of styles and options when it comes to solar garden lights. I enjoy being outside in my garden after dark and the soft glow of LED lights make my garden more inviting. My favorite solar lights are designed to provide minute illumination while being very decorative. I found a set of two solar light stakes - one looks like the moon and the other looks like the sun. They are pretty and add decorative touches to my garden in addition to lighting a pathway.

Decorating in the Garden: Garden Statues

I'll admit it - I love those little resin or ceramic statues for a garden. Not lawn gnomes mind you, but birds and butterflies and the like. They can be found at a very inexpensive price at local dollar stores.

Choosing a theme is a great idea when adding decorative statues and other elements. Whether the theme is fairies, insects, woodland creatures, geometric shapes, or the like, collecting like items can create a pleasant visual display.

I have mostly insects (butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies) and woodland creatures (birds, snakes, turtles, frogs, squirrels) in my garden.

Decorating in the Garden: Flags

Adding decorative flags is one of my favorite ways to decorate my garden. Whether it's a horizontal flagpole that holds a standard size flag, a smaller garden size flag stake or small, mini flags that can be added to flower pots or stuck in the ground - flags can add color and whimsy. I have several assorted-sized flags in my garden - all with brightly-colored insects.

Decorating in the Garden: Junk Items

Repurposing junk items is a great way to create free garden decorations that are unique and unusual. In my garden, I have reused old chunks of fast-setting concrete for edging rocks, an old headboard as a climbing trellis, and many other items that I run across. An old galvanized bucket that I pulled out of a dumpster became a container for flowers, a two-liter soda bottle became a colorful windsock.

I don't have a green thumb so a creative thumb won't help me there either.

I love seeing small decorations in the garden. I have some shiny, stainless steel balls, each on a metal stake, that I can poke in the ground to a desired depth to reflect whatever plant is nearby. Lovely article!

I reuse broken terracotta pots by arranging them half-buried and planting flowers near the rim or letting the moss overtake them. It puts a twist on potted versus ground plantings.

    Great ideas as always.

I love many of the same types of garden decor as you do. One of my faves is a pair of my husband's old work boots full of hens and chicks plants set next to an old metal wheel. Nice ideas, Tamara. :)
