"Garden Spells"

As a resident of the great state of North Carolina, I am biased in my opinion of this author. I had no clue who Sarah Addison Allen was until her first book hit a local bookstore. Garden Spells enchanted me from the moment I picked it up and read the synapse on the back cover. The premise behind the story is Claire Waverly lives in a small North Carolina town. Like all small towns that I know, everyone knows everyone else.

In Garden Spells, each family is known for a certain characteristic. The Waverly family is known for being a little different. They have lived in the same house for generations and tended the same garden for generations. Through a run of events, Claire now occupies the Waverly house. She also runs a catering company that specializes in cooking with edible flowers picked right from their garden. Sydney, Claire's sister, has finally made her way back home after a lifetime of blowing in the breeze. Sydney is finally dealing with the things that made her leave Bascom in the first place.

Sarah Addison Allen weaves such a beautiful visual landscape for the reader. She also uses her excellent research skills to find recipes that use herbs and flowers with special influential properties. The reader will be spellbound and not be able to put this book down. I highly recommend to anyone, not just North Carolinians, to read Garden Spells. You will not be disappointed.
