Garden Verse: Winter Heartland Blessing

Deb Martin-Webster
Calm the wind when geese take flight
in perfect formation among the thermals they fly
cooler nights brings blankets of frost
to linger on the sycamores barren branches

A familiar scent of burning brush and leaves
plumes of smoke billow upward against the sky
hold firm the farmer's weather- worn face
a moment taken to bless his heartland bounty

Farmers know well winters prelude
warmth of sweet hay baled round and square
barn doors battened and tractors housed
to brace against winters grasp

Shorter days and shadows longer
no fields to plow, no crops to seed
a humble nod to a good night slumber
a season of rest for farmer and kin
