You can see if your friends, family, or even your neighbors, are thinning out their plants. You maybe able to get some new plants for your own flower bed. You may want to trade your help for these new plants. You can also keep a look out for when your local greenhouse or nursery is having their end of the season, buy one get one sale. This is always a great time to get those expensive plants you have had your eye on all season long. Just make sure to stay away from any diseased or dead plants, these will not make you garden look good in the end.
Caring for Your Garden:
When you are weeding your yard, use your hands and pull them, rather then buying those expensive liquid weed killers. This will help you save money,so you can spend this it on that wonderful new garden ornament or new plant for your yard. This is much better for the environment, that you are trying to create in your back yard. Also when you are watering your garden or yard, please remember if it is raining to shut your sprinklers off. You can always reset them after the rain has stopped, this will save you a lot of money. For your container plants, cut up a small kitchen sponge, and bury them into the soil of your containers. When you water they will soak up water and the soil will use it when needed. You will still need to water your containers at least every other day, so they do not dry out.
Finding Your Garden Art:
When you are going through your neighborhood yard sales, be on the look out for items that you can use as garden art pieces. For example, old wicker baskets, ceramic crocks, and even old mens work boots, can make wonderful container for your flowers. You may even find, an old bicycle, cookie jars, or even animal nick knacks that can be used in your garden. Here is where you will need to think outside of the box, and get your creative mind working. Because even and old leather purse can be made into a planter, to hang on your front door, or garden gate.
Finding Larger Garden Items:
Another way to save money, while gardening on a small budget, is to keep your ears open. There maybe someone you know that is replacing their deck, removing some stepping stones, or even rocks from their own gardens. That if your offer your services, and help them with their gardening project, they will be happy for you to take the old ones off of their hands. This is recycling at it's best, they get rid of the older items, and you will receive new pieces for your own garden.
Some great tips for when you are gardening on a small budget, it to always keep your eyes, and ears open for someone, throwing anything away that you looking to use in your own garden. Always ask for their permission, before you take anything, that you have your eyes on. Offer your help when ever you can for the items you are wanting. Gardener always help one another gardener when they can, this is what makes gardening so fun. Great friendships can start from simply helping each other with their gardening projects.
