Garment Integrated Electronic Technology Saves Lives

Clothing with built-in electronics can make the difference between life and death for many people in our society. Cardiac patients, as well as people with dangerous jobs like firefighters, can be warned and saved by this type of clothing. Sensors in the clothing can measure the temperature or monitor heartbeat and breathing. If something is wrong, the electronics in the clothing will alarm in emergency situations.

Every year firefighters die of overheating. They don't have time to notice that their surrounding temperatures are too high, before it is too late. A new fire-protection suit, made by the company Viking can prevent some of these types of deaths, according to an article in Science Illustrated.

The suit is equipped with thermal sensors and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the shoulders and sleeves, and the fireman and his colleagues will get warned if the temperature gets too high. The very powerful LEDs will flash rapidly if it gets too hot inside or outside of the suit, so that the firemen know that they must withdraw. The battery and microchips, which calculates the temperature and alarm are not integrated in the clothes and must be carried in a pocket.

Another company, Italian Smartex, has developed a shirt with integrated sensors, which can record the wearer's heartbeat and breathing. The fabric is elastic, so that the sensors are kept close to the body. The vital signs information from the shirt, which is comfortable to wear and can be washed if necessary, is sent wirelessly in real time via Bluetooth, or wireless networks. The system is particularly suitable for cardiac patients, who can be supervised all day, without being tied to a hospital bed. The doctor can always check the "condition" of the patient, and with the right software, an automatic alarm can trig off if the data from the sensors indicate that something is wrong.

The pulse is not that difficult to measure, and clothes with built-in pulsimeter devices are already on the market. According to the article you can buy a sports bra that records the user's pulse and transmits the information wireless to a wristwatch. British researchers at the Centre for Materials Research and Innovation at the University of Bolton are working on something more ambitious, in terms of developing a bra with built-in electronics. They are ready with a prototype on a bra that can scan for breast cancer tumors.

Microwave antennas, which can easily be sewn into a bra, register the minimum temperature changes that occur in a breast that is infected with cancer. Local temperature increases are among the first signs of breast cancer, and a bra of this new type will probably be able to diagnose breast cancer at a very early stage - before it will spread. Scientists estimate that a bra with this technology could reach the market in just a few years.

At Virginia Tech, researchers integrate other forms of sensors in clothes, which can be used to supervise elderly or disabled people. Very small accelerometers can provide information about the user's movements, so that when one accidently falls it can be detected and activate an alarm. With these technological advancements it is not impossible that we will have clothes that discreetly point out that you exercise too little.

A combination of the textile industry and the electronics industry is not exactly compatible, but particularly in the health field, we may have to start getting used that our clothes are watching and helping us to live healthier.
