The Garmin nuvi 3790LMT is a GPS with a 4.3" multi-touch glass display. The WVGA color TFT with white backlight display is capable of 800x480 resolution and vivid images. It is not a bulky or heavy GPS, and one of the main features of it is the ability to travel outside your car with it as a tool for navigating unfamiliar cities on foot. It has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a 4 hour battery life, so it does not always need to be plugged in to be used. The dimensions of it are 4.8" x 2.9" x .35" and it weighs 4 ounces. Since it is less than 9mm thick, it can fit in your pocket. The display is orientable either horizontally or vertically, so it can be mounted traditionally in your car and held much like a phone in your hand when used on foot.
The Garmin nuvi 3790LMT comes with lifetime map and traffic updates. This means that traffic updates will be downloaded constantly, with map updates being downloaded up to 4 times a year. You will not have to pay for updates for the life of the GPS which helps offset the pricetag of the device ($399.99). Map updates can cost $80 a pop. There are also a large number of other features pre-installed on the Garmin nuvi 3790LMT. One is called nuRoute technology and comes in the form of 2 separate pieces of software: trafficTrends and myTrends. TrafficTrends learns daytime traffic trends for traffic flow and uses it to improve the routes it suggests and better predict your time of arrival. It bases this on the time of day and the day of the week. MyTrends uses the locations you save in your "Favorites" folder to try and predict where you're going to go. The intention is that eventually you won't need to input a destination you visit frequently. When you start driving in that direction, it will assume that's where you want to go and will pull up the appropriate information.
Voice-activated is another feature which is becoming more prominent in GPS's but is still seen only in higher-end models. This feature lets you control certain functions of the GPS using voice commands. This keeps your hands on the wheel where they belong while still giving you the control you need. Another feature which lets you stay focused on the road is Bluetooth capability. When you sync your Bluetooth capable phone to the Garmin nuvi 3790LMT you can make and receive calls using the multi-touch display on the GPS. The screen is capable of displaying buildings and terrains in 3d when in zoomed in at a low level. This gives you a realistic perspective of where you're at, and may be helpful when navigating unfamiliar areas. Speed limits are posted so you always know what it is whether or not you've seen a sign recently. There are also over 6 million points of interest that come pre-loaded. Some points of interest include stores, hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, gas stations, and ATMs. You can search for these, or tell the GPS to display them on the map whenever they are nearby.
Lane Assist is a feature which tells you which lane you need to be in when exiting an expressway, making a turn, or heading through a junction. If you aren't sure which lane you should be in, or the markings are unclear, this feature is available. HotFix satellite prediction calculates your position quickly so you don't have to wait a long time for your position to be recalled. This is similar to the Where Am I? emergency locator feature which tells you where you are if you get lost and don't even know which direction to head. If you know where you are and know where you want to go but aren't sure of the name, Garmin Connect Photos lets you download pictures of places and helps you navigate to them. It's great for sight seeing because you can choose the tourist attraction among the pictures and figure out how to get there. If you aren't in a rush but want to save money there is a ecoRoute feature which calculates the most fuel-efficient route and tracks your fuel usage.
Garmin Lock is an anti-theft feature. It is a mode that you can turn on and prevents the GPS from being accessed until you enter the correct password. Garmin Garage lets you customize the Garmin nuvi 3790LMT by downloading custom voices and vehicles. Other things this GPS can do include a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, and calculator. An optional feature is called cityXplorer. This is an optional download that helps you navigate cities on foot. It can show you where to walk, where to catch a bus, subway, tram or any other type of public transportation. It can also show you schedules for all of these modes of transportation. CityXplorer is purchased on a per city basis and starts at $9.99. Most North American and European cities are offered.
