Garnier Nutrisse Hair Color Versus Loreal Superior Preference

A Comparison of Two Red Hair Color Products

Cheryl Dennett
Coloring your own hair can be fun. It can be quite enjoyable to experiment with different colors and shades. It can also be a total disaster. I have used two different brands of color. I have used both of these products several times and used different colors within each brand. Here is my experience with these two brands of hair color.

The two colors I have used the most are Garnier Nutrisse 66 True Red and Loreal Superior Preference RR07 Intense Red Copper. Both hair color products give approximately the same shadeof red to dark brown hair, which is my natural hair color. You can find both of these brands at your local drug store or department store, such as Wal Mart. But, that is where the similarity stops.

The Garnier product is a bit trickier to use. The color agent is in a tube that has to be squeezed to get the gel into the reactor bottle. It is a bit difficult to use when the tube is slippery and you are wearing latex gloves to protect your hands. It is also troublesome to be sure the entire amount of color agent is squeezed out of the tube. The Garnier product also burns your skin much more after application.

The Loreal product is much easier to use. The color agent is in a bottle with a screw on top. It is very easy to open and much easier to get into the bottle with the reactant agent. The Loreal product still stings a bit when it has been on your skin a while, but not nearly as much as the Garnier. Loreal also does not discolor the skin as much as the Garnier product. It is almost impossible to color your hair and not get a bit of the product on your forehead or ear.

After using any hair color that causes your hair to be lighter than the original color, keeping it conditioned and hydrated is a major issue. The Garnier hair color comes with one application of conditioner. To get more Garnier conditioner, you are required to purchase it separately. The Loreal product comes with six applications of a once a week super hydrating conditioner. This is enough to last until the next time you color your hair. If you buy Loreal again, you will have another six weeks of conditioner, as well. So, you only have to buy additional conditioner if your hair is very dry.

After using the Loreal brand hair color, my hair does not have a chemical smell at all. After using Garnier, my hair always smelled awful for at least two days. I would much rather use a product that doesn't make my hair smell like a vat of chemicals. Immediately after rinsing out the hair color and the conditioner that comes with Loreal, my hair smelled wonderful.

Finding a red hair color that will stay an attractive shade of red for more than a couple days is difficult. While the Garnier hair color does stay true for about 2 weeks, the Loreal product stays the same hue for about 4 weeks. It is possible to use a hair coloring product every four weeks and keep it healthy if you keep the dead ends trimmed off and use conditioner regularly.

Loreal may cost a bit more, but in my opinion, it is by far the better product. It costs about three dollars more than the Garnier hair color. But, getting more conditioner and having my hair look and smell better is worth the extra cost to me. The benefits of using Loreal far outweigh the lower price of Garnier.

I have medium length straight, thick, coarse hair that is about 25% gray. I have colored my hair for about 15 years in salon and at home. For the last couple of years I have used Garnier Nutrisse. I found it to work well and I like the smell, which I never found offensive. I recently bought some L'Oreal Preference because they happen to carry it in the grocery store and I had used it for years prior to the Garnier. I must say that I think I prefer it. The color itself is easier to use because I mix two colors and it's liquid, not in a tube. I notice no smell at all after washing it out and neither color has burned my scalp or seems to have damaged my hair. I color the roots every 3 weeks and that seems to work for me. I think because my hair is shorter and very layered that it makes for less damage in the ends. I think both work well and it's really personal preference. I don't find salon color any better and it is way more expensive and time consuming to have done.

I have use both products Loreal and Garnier. I have thick long dry curly hair, my natural color is darck brown. I olor my hair blond in a salon and then started doing it my self with the Loreal color it was irritating for me but i kep using it because of the color result but then i notice that my hair was falling and it wast getting more dry. I then started using garnier to keep my blond, same result of loreal eept that my hair stop falling as much as it did with loreal plus is not that irritating.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. They haven't discontinued the colour, just changed the box. It's still number 68 too. I just bought a box from Shoppers Drug Mart 3 days ago.

I cannot use L'Oreal hair products - it's as though they are made with the cheapest ingredients. Garnier left my hair gummy (bad sign) and L'Oreal has always burned my scalp and falls right out. Their shampoos aren't any better.
For silver/grey/white hair coverage, the best thing to do is apply it first to those areas and leave it on for 15 more minutes and then apply the color to the rest of your hair.
Highlights seem to be the best way to cover grey/white/silver hair(s). If you can get a friend to help you you won't have to turn into a contortionist!
As for shampoos, the ingredients label should not have sulfates, alcohol, listed first. The John Frieda shampoos and conditioners work well, and really do help keep your hair healthy.
You can try a beauty school as well - I had a color weave done for $45. It came out well, and I didn't have to fiddle around with it.
Oh, and never use those haircolors in the 99c stores - they are made in Korea and will wreck your hair.
    Good luck.

I used Garnier Nutrisse Luscious Mango for years as well, and have yet to find a replacement for it since it's been discontinued. None of the other reds I've tried have come close to it. That was the best out of all the Nutrisse shades I have tried, the rest seem to fade very quickly (but not as quickly as Colorsilk or anything by Clairol).

I love garnier, but had to stop using it because the company discontinued the color I use which was luscious mango, brillent copper number 68, it was a beautiful shade of red. They have other shades of reds, some darker, some lighter, but none that can replace number 68. I don't know why they discontinued that color, out of all the other colors they have, probable because I liked it. Is there anyone else that was using that shade, and now is lost to find a replacement?

Hi. i used garnier nutrisse and i liked that out come... of colour, for about a week that is. my hair is brittle and i feel like a sheep dog! i shed so darn much and it's kind of embaressing not gonna lie... anyway, i guess it varies from person to person. i liked the colour of red, but not the effect is had on my hair.

    Same here!

I used garnier and my hair came out in clumps.. It took two years to get back to normal.

The burning feeling you describe is a skin allergy, so it varies from person to person. Garnier doesn't bother me at all, Loreal stings a little, and Clairol Nice 'n Easy leaves my scalp itchy for weeks.

I also don't agree with you on which brand dyes skin more. I just used Garnier and didn't notice a large smudge of dye on my shoulder until it was time to rinse the dye out. Thankfully, all I had to do was wipe my skin with some damp TP and the color was gone. Loreal, however, always left my scalp colored, no matter how careful I was with the application.

I just dyed my hair with the Garnier after a few times of dying with Loreal, and I have to say that garnier is AMAZING.
I will never go back, the color is so gorgeous, and my hair feels amazing.
