Gas Boycott Will Not Lower Oil Prices; People Will Purchase More Gas the Day Before

Perhaps We Should Call it the Just Buy Gas on a Different Day-cott

Scott Schlimmer
Today (May 15th), we're supposed to boycott gas stations. By not purchasing gas on that day, we supposedly will send a message that we oppose such high prices, eventually lowering gas prices.

I wonder who came up with such genius plan.

Let's say you decide to participate in the boycott. The problem is, you'll have to fill up on the 14th or the 16th. Have you consumed any less gas? Probably not?

So if the oil companies look at sales over the 14th, 15th, and 16th, are they going to see a boycott that hurt their sales? Will they be convinced to lower their prices? Of course not! More likely lots of people filled up on the 14th or will purchase on the 16th.

I'd even go as far as saying that over the 3-day span, gas sales will be higher than on a typical but similar 3-day span.

So ironically, the gas boycott could increase gas sales, resulting in higher prices.

To send a message to the oil companies and to lower gas prices, people are going to have to use less gas. Consistently. One day won't do it.

Boycotting gas stations for one day will do nothing. In fact, the boycott should be called the Just Buy on a Different Day-cott. That's all it is.

You hit the nail on the head. Now if we were all to boycott for a month or possible even just a week or two that might make a real difference in gas prices, but most likely it would be short lived.

Good point. After reading this, I realize that this might have been why the station I stopped at yesterday, lowered the advertised price by $1. Seems like as long as there is demand, the supply will cost us....scary but true.

I was thinking the same thing. The gas stations are just going to be super crowded tomorrow!
