Gas Prices Back on a Rise, Why Complain?

Kevin Smith
American citizens complain too much about things that we cannot control. Gas prices are obviously not subject to a public popular vote. We definitely need the gas prices to stay as low as possible, and since bottoming out at about $1.62 a gallon, they have begun to rise once again. Before gas prices even broke the three dollar mark, people were complaining about gas prices like they were an open sore. When the gas prices topped out over the summer of 2008, soaring above $4 a gallon, the middle-class was hurt very badly by it. Now that the gas prices have gone way down and are beginning to show new signs of climbing, there is no point in complaining about it. Our complaints about the gas prices did not help us before, and they will not help us now.

People who live on a budget pretty much live from paycheck to paycheck. So something that is as mandatory for them to function as gas is, it's crucial that they make gas part of their budgeting. We can understand quite well, why people had so many complaints about $2.47 a gallon gas back in 2005, but $35 for a full tank of gas really wasn't all that bad. As a matter of fact, people weren't really hurt by that. It seemed like the more complaining the people were doing, the higher the gas prices got. Before we knew it, the average price for a gallon of gas was about $3.65.

When the gas prices average went up so much, the same person that was paying $35 for a full tank of gas, was paying about $58 for a full tank of gas. That could put a real dent in a person's pockets especially someone who closely budgets their money. Even though it still did not bother me personally a whole lot, middle-class people who would usually put supreme gas in their cars now had to downgrade to either plus or regular unleaded. Some cars need that higher grade of gas to run smoothly. Even still, the gas prices were climbing fast. In July 2008, the gas prices soared above $4 a gallon, which is when gas prices really hurt middle-class America. People who regularly filled their car up with a full tank of gas could no longer afford to do so. So now that those times have passed, we as the people should be grateful regardless of the fact that the prices are beginning to rise again.

Now that the average price for regular unleaded gas is around two dollars a gallon, we should all be happy that we are not paying more than that. All of the complaining we did before back when gas prices were under $2.50 a gallon did not help the gas prices go back down. Now that the gas prices are lower than they have been a very long while, those of us who were used to filling up our vehicles with a full tank of gas can do so without spending our rent money. With all that said, let's take advantage of today's gas prices and not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
