Gas Prices Causing Worry

The brief break from the strain of gas prices is over as the prices range from $3.45 to $3.59 a gallon and up. It is rather high considering that during the first few weeks of July 2011 I managed to find gas for $3.25 per gallon which was a relief to my wallet. Now the gas prices mean that once again there will be those struggling to keep up with the cost of it. The predictions that gas prices are going back up to $4 a gallon are making some nervous and this writer is no exception.

It is not the first time that gas prices have gotten that high in recent years but it is getting increasingly difficult to keep up with them. The sigh of relief at the pumps each time prices go down is usually short lived but just long enough for people to reach a false sense of security that the prices may go down a bit more. There is starting to be a need to save money not for emergencies but for increasing gas prices to make the commute to work. Those that use public transportation don't appear to notice the increases as much as those that do not have it available.

Changes
There are a number of changes that have to be made immediately when you can not afford to put gas in your car. Those that live even a short distance such as a mile or two outside of town will notice immediately that they are paying more to go into town. Habits are hard to break but those that found themselves having trouble covering expenses prior to the increase will already have habits in place that prevent them from spending anymore than absolutely necessary.

Generic brands, sales and turning off the electrical items in the house to cut down on the light bill are all things that people turn to when attempting to save money. Saving money on gas is a bit more difficult when you have to places to go and things to do.

I have wondered just how much those people that drive from one state to another often at least 100 miles to work each day manage to do so. Personally if I had to drive to work each day I'd have to get all my hours in during a two to three day time span in addition to running all my errands while I was out already. I tried purchasing a gift card for a gas station recently because they were giving $10 off the $50 card but it didn't work out very well for me. Gas at the particular station I purchased the card for was approximately fifteen cents higher than it is everywhere else which means I spent more than I other wise would have when I put gas in my car even though it was only in need of a quarter of a tank.

Lesson learned. Sometimes it's not worth not having to spend that extra ten dollars especially if it costs you more in the long run. Paying closer attention to gas prices in the future will help me to avoid spending more than I can afford to just to save a little bit of money. In the meantime I'll continue to go as few places as possible and work as much as possible to cover expenses without feeling the strain of gas prices as much.
