Gas Prices and Hybrid Cars: What A Joke!

K. D. Adams
If you're like me, you're pissed off about the rising gas prices in this country and it seems no one that matters gives a rat's ass. It's quite sickening when some people can't afford to get to work because our president won't get involved and stop "big oil" from ripping off the United States citizens. But will any Americans stand up and say enough is enough? The short answer is NO! We continue to get in our gas guzzling SUVs and head off to parts unknown and pretend that this gas gouging will eventually go away. Some of us have curbed our driving habits (I know I have) and have made a conscious effort to try to save gas by driving less. Most have not but having said that, it's not the American people who are to blame. I blame our sorry ass excuse for a president for looking after his own interests instead of ours. I blame him for letting the oil companies run this country instead of our government, and I blame him for using millions of dollars in oil to fight a war over oil. What's that? This war is about liberating the Iraqi people? Now if you think that this war is about terrorism and freeing the people of Iraq, then you're high. . OK, I'm done bitching about our president and the price of gas....for now.

Now let me get to the reason I wrote this article and it is just as infuriating. It's this scam that every one of us got sucked into called "hybrid vehicles". Oh yes, the car of the future the going to save the world! What a crock of shit! There is going to be a whole lot of you reaching for your keyboards to tell me how wrong I am but before you start clicking away, let me explain myself. The hybrid car in of itself is a fantastic idea. These cars are environmentally safe and were supposed to get excellent gas mileage and save the consumer hundreds of dollars a year in gas. Well we now know that that's not the way things went down, is it?

When we first heard about these little gems, we were promised cars that would get 50 to 60 miles per gallon and the sticker price did reflect that. The cars were priced about 5 to 10 thousand dollars more than their conventional counterparts. The choice was if you would drive the vehicle enough to make it worth your wild and save all that gas. Ford came out with a hybrid SUV that got over 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Things were looking up but then reality set in and something went seriously wrong along the way. All of the sudden these cars weren't getting 50 mpg, they're not even getting 40 mpg. Go to Toyota .com and compare the mpg of a hybrid Camry with the mpg of a conventional Camry and you know what you'll find? The hybrid Camry gets THREE miles per gallon (34mpg) more than the conventional Camry (31mpg). The hybrid Camry is $5,000 more than a Camry LE so where is the big savings?

These cars ARE capable of getting the mileage that we hoped they would get but somewhere along the line the oil companies got to the car manufacturers and paid them off to back off of the mileage they should get. This is the way the oil companies think: "We cannot have the average citizen driving past gas stations time after time after time! We won't make our record breaking profits if we're not selling gas." The sad part of all this is that the car companies are just as guilty as the oil companies because they have the technology to produce fuel efficient cars, they choose not to because of huge kickbacks by big oil. You know it and I know but there is not a damn thing we can do about it as long as our government continues to give these industries so much power. These brazen bastards will stand right there in front of you with one hand on your shoulder and the other shaking your hand telling you straight to your face; "We are going to f**k you seven ways from Sunday and you're going to like it!" And we, as a nation, are powerless to do anything about it. We will continue to pay record gas prices for a long time to come and we will continue to be sucked in to the 2009 line of crap the car companies sell us and pray that maybe next year will be the year that they stop lying to us.

A lot of you may not agree with what I said and personally I don't care. Those of you who know me can attest to the fact that the only opinion that matters is mine. Just kidding; I want to hear what you think about my conspiracy theory and how far off base you think I am. Have I said some things that you've been thinking about for along time and just didn't want to say it? I know one thing for sure...I feel soooo much better now that I have.

KD - great job. I think you would like Bryan Belrad's article on a cure for high gas prices http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/800803/cure_for_high_gas_prices_a_converted.html?cat=15. And I'm curious what you would think of my article on ethanol! Thanks for favoriting me! Am adding you to mine.

I like your style of writing. We need more angry people who write what's really on their mind. Keep it up. And remember, Don't Let Them Take The Fight Out Of You.
