The Gift of Fear encourages you to trust your intuition or your "gut feelings." When that still small voice in the back of your head is trying to tell you that something seems wrong, amiss, or out of place, it just might be. Don't second guess your intuitions or your gut feelings.
The Gift of Fear empowers women by letting them know that it's ok to be concerned for their own safety. When approached by strangers, women often worry about being nice or saying something in response that is at least polite. If something doesn't seem right and a woman is the least bit worried about her own safety, being polite should be the least of her concerns.
The Gift of Fear encourages us to realize that violence is a very real thing- not a myth. Gone should be the days of "it'll never happen to me." Violence is a very real aspect of humanity, and more realistically, we should be aware of the behaviors, signals, and warning signs that may help alert us to potential dangerous situations. The Gift of Fear shatters the glass houses of anyone living within the mindset that walking around every day oblivious to anything beyond our own self is completely safe.
The Gift of Fear encourages us to pay attention. So often, women are oblivious to their surroundings or either lost in thought as they go about their daily activities. Whether it's an internal conversation planning dinner, the day's to-do list, or rushing to be somewhere to pick up something by a certain time, the demands of our days are often consuming. The Gift of Fear reminds us of the importance of paying attention to our surroundings wherever we are. By simply being aware of our surroundings and also paying attention to the details concerning what is going on around us, we can often protect ourselves a great deal.
Through compelling stories and simplistic and practical instructions, Gavin de Becker shows us how our fear can save our lives. Fear is our instinctive and ever present guardian angel that we only need to learn how to tune into better. Women should certainly not be afraid to rush right out and read the book right away and share it with other women who might benefit from it as well.
In addition to Oprah, The Gift of Fear has also been featured by many women's magazines, ABC, Larry King Live, Time and Newsweek.
