GLBT Affirming Institutions in Georgia

Thomas West

Although it might not immediately spring to mind in discussions of gay friendly colleges and universities, the state of Georgia is actually home to several such institutions. Whether you are looking for top-tier private universities, quality state schools, of smaller liberal arts institutions, there are several schools in Georgia that are very welcoming and affirming of members of the GLBT community.

Emory University

Emory University is one of the most prestigious schools in the state of Georgia and, along with such prestige, it is also very open and welcoming to members of the GLBT community. The university is home to the Office of Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Life, which coordinates a number of activities on campus and is an ideal place for GLBT students to visit. Furthermore, the university has also adopted several very GLBT-friendly policies, including benefits for same-sex partners and anti-discrimination laws. There is also a Studies in Sexuality program, which allows students to explore the academics behind the GLBT community.

Georgia State University

This state university has recently begun a process of outreach to the GLBT community that involves the Safe Zone Program and the formation of a LGBTQIQ Resource Library, which has several titles of interest to those pursuing research in GLBT Studies. The university is also home to several organizations of interest to GLBT students, including BlackOUT, whose membership consists of those of African descent who are also LGBTQ. Although not as gay friendly as some universities, Georgia State is rapidly making efforts to make itself more accessible to members of the GLBT community.
University of Georgia

The University of Georgia hosts a GLBT Resource Center, which works to create an inclusive and welcoming community throughout the campus of the university. The Office itself is a safe space for members of the community and their allies, and to that effect demands that anyone who comes into the office show respect to their comrades. They host a number of programs, such as the Lavender Graduation and the Library, which houses a number of books and periodicals of interest to students pursuing GLBT studies or who are merely curious. The office is truly a great place for GLBT students at the University of Georgia who are looking for a safe space where they be themselves without fear of harassment.

So, if you are thinking about applying to a university or college in Georgia and would like one where GLBT students and people are accorded respect, then consider any one of these three excellent institutions.
