Gay marriage rights being allowed in New York State is a big step forward. This move may be reversed, it may be Andrew Cuomo's first testing the waters for a Presidential run; it is something that's long overdue. But just because the bill was passed doesn't mean that same sex couples in New York State won't still face opposition.
In a knee-jerk reaction to the news, FoxNews.com was all over their impression of the conservative viewpoint, saying that "Same-Sex Marriage Advocates Face Uphill Climb in Building on N.Y. Vote." While that may be true the fact that Fox News would rather focus in on the stops along the way where same-sex efforts have faltered rather than where they have succeeded shows the fear those opposed have of being overrun by equality.
One of the biggest challenges against the same-sex marriage arrangement is the obvious clash with church and state. Church's perform "marriages;" same-sex couples already have the civil union statutes in some states. The fact that there is strong opposition from bishops in New York means that true equality is not near. Family Research Council released a documentary called "The Problem with Same-Sex Marriage: How It Will Affect You and Your Children," continued to stoke the fear card.
Also there is still a ban on same-sex marriages in 32 states. The biggest state in the United States; California; still has Proposition 8 on the books. Prop 8 clearly states: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
New York is nestled in a pocket of the country which is much older than California and has been breaking down walls for years. Even though New York City is very liberal and progressive, there are still many opinions in New York which are far more conservative and stuck in a way of thinking that appears past its prime.
From the East End of Long Island to the Lackawanna Shores of Lake Erie, the New York State marriage discussion is one that's not over. Not even in the slightest.
