Gay Pride Events: Where to Find Gay Pride Events in Your Area

Sandra Ketcham
Gay pride events are held in various cities around the world and are based on the philosophy that lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender individuals should be proud of their identity and sexual orientation. Parades, festivals, sporting events, and other types of celebrations provide gays with an opportunity to connect with each other, bring attention to causes such as gay rights, and enable gays and transgender individuals the chance to celebrate their sexuality and pride in their personal and gender identity.

Gay pride events typically last for several days to a week, and are organized by local volunteer organizations and gay and lesbian groups. If you are interested in participating in a gay pride event this year, but are not certain how to locate one near you, the tips below will make it easy for you to find safe and exciting gay pride events in your area.

Check the Internet for Gay Pride Events:

Look online for gay pride event listings. Most of the larger GLBT Web sites provide details about gay pride events around the world. Two such sites are GayCityUsa and InterPride. Additionally, reaching out to GLBT forums or online support groups can connect you with other web users in your area that may be able to point you in the right direction.

Ask Friends and Family for Information:

Speak with friends or family members to determine if anyone you know is aware of upcoming scheduled events. You would be surprised how much information is circulating around. If you have gay friends, they are likely to have some idea of when and where the next gay pride event will be taking place.

Check with Local Community Centers:

Visit your local community center, especially if it offers services or support groups for gays and lesbians. Many community centers have scheduled events posted on bulletin boards, often right inside the front doors. Your local colleges and universities may also be able to provide you with information on where to find upcoming gay pride events.

Contact Your Local City Hall or Permit Office:

Check with City Hall. Even though gay pride events are typically arranged and hosted by volunteer organizations, it is likely that permits would have been taken out for the use of land or other facilities. Making an official inquiry is typically not necessary, and an informal phone call with often get you the information you need.

Dig Out Your Phone Book:

Flip through your local phone book and contact any clubs in your area that advertise to GLBT individuals. Very often, nightclubs and bars will put on their own special shows or activities to coincide for the increased business they experience during gay pride event weeks. Club owners and employees can be an invaluable source of information. If you are searching for gay pride events elsewhere around the world, a quick search through a phone directory online will provide you with the contact information you need.
