Gay Soccer Coach Fired for Starting a Family

Sports fans are a forgiving lot. We hope that Tiger Woods gets his groove back. We hope that Ben Roethlisberger can put that nasty sexual assault charge behind him. Michael Vick paid his debt and now we are free to cheer him. We hope that Brett Favre can stop taking cell phone pictures of his penis and get into the playoffs just one more time.

As long as you can toss that ball or hit that drive, you are O.K. in our book.

But there are things that some cannot forgive.

At Belmont University, women's soccer coach, Lisa Howe was forced to resign because she was about to start a family. Oh, I should note that Lisa is gay and she is having a baby with her same sex partner. Imagine that - a gay female athlete.

Belmont U. thinks that gay Christian coaches are disruptive.

Ms. Howe says, "I believe I am a good, moral person, who cares for others. Those and other basic Christian tenets are important to me, to how I live my life, including as a coach.."

And if you think that there is an ulterior motive in all this, Lisa is a winner. Her team took the Sun Belt Conference regular season championship in 2009.

Fans of teams mired in losing season after losing season often offer to sell their soul to the devil for a chance at competitive respectability. Ms. Lowe seems to be the kind of coach that used to get the cover of the Wheaties box rather than the unceremonious ax.

Her players are reportedly dejected about losing their coach. The students at Belmont have taken up the cause. They are getting a free, uncredited course in Christian ethics and basic human rights

As for Lisa Howe, she'll land a good job somewhere with a bit more tolerance. Sports fans know that instead of having a baby, she would have been better off shooting someone.
