Geek Chic

From David Tennant to Noah Wyle to Matt Smith, the look of Geek Chic has come into being. Who knew that bow ties, glasses, and goofy hair would become a popular style trend. As British television has become more popular with shows like Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Primeval, these looks have been highlighted. David Tennant's striped suit, bold framed glasses, and messy hair has become a household look for many. So how do you get this kind of look, and not fall into the dweeb category?

With any style that has become popular right now Geek Chic is really a melding of several styles, so dressing with pocket protectors, ill fitting pants, and greasy slicked down hair is not the look. Fit is always important no matter what style, so keep that in mind when searching for blue jeans or dress slacks, they do need to hang properly, and they need to be belted at the waist, not left to hang down to your butt. Also shirts are the same, make sure they fit correctly, not too tight, and definitely not to baggy. This is when it is important and vital to visit a high department store, just to get an idea from their people how a suit shirt should fit.

A couple of tips to keep in mind when trying to get into this style:

  1. Glasses are not just for those with bad eyesight. And remember bold is in, so dark plastic frames would be perfect. For women this is the same, but the horn rimmed glasses are also a great accessory.
  2. Mix dress clothes in with more casual. Wear a suit slacks, dress shirt, and converse.
  3. Hair is where you need to stick with the latest trends. Messy, unkempt hairstyles are still the fashion for men, and for women, just stick with what works for you.
  4. Believe it or not ties are cool. Matt Smith managed to bring back bow ties even, so don't be shy. Find a tie that works for you and wear it. Women can as well, ties are very in vogue, just remember to be cautious of the colors, otherwise you could end up being more scene then geek.

With any style it is important to keep one's personality into account and use that to give your own unique twist. Geek chic is all about being who you really are and reveling in it.
