Basically, a few weeks back, the authors of the book, "Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd", created a competition on their respective blogs. The contest was to design an avatar of something nerdy or related to one of the many authors who contributed short stories to the book. The winners won a free Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) of the book, which actually comes out in August. My avatar won in the Under 18 Category. Last week I received my copy of the book from Cecil Castellucci who sent it all the way from Canada to Miami!
Basically the book is an anthology of nerdom. The book consists of short stories written by the following authors:
M.T. Anderson, Libba Bray, Cassandra Clare, John Green, Cynthia and Greg Leitich Smith, David Levithan, Kelly Link, Barry Lyga, Tracy Lynn, Wendy Mass, Garth Nix, Scott Westerfield, Lisa Yee, and Sara Zarr.
Most of the stories are quite funny, and all of them well written, as the previously mentioned are all wonderful authors. The stories vary on the type of geek, from Star Wars, ComicCon goers to Theatre Geeks; Geektastic is a book any geek is bound to enjoy, I know I have!
As well as short stories, the book also includes little funny comics and short guides, such as "How To Look Cool and Not Drool in Front of Your Favorite Author" by Hope Larson.
It is fun to read these short stories from some great authors about characters that you can really identify with! If you know Klingon or you are an avid gamer, there are stories for you! Into grammar? Astronomy? There are stories that you can relate to!
Even if you are not these kinds of geek, it is still very interesting to read all these stories. For example, I am not really an "astronomy buff", however, I found Wendy Mass's "The Stars of the Finish Line" to be really interesting! And if you like romance, don't think you will not find it within these stories, because there certainly are stories of romance, including the aforementioned one.
Basically, I really recommend this book, it is something new and a book that you don't even have to read all at once, because the stories are short and unrelated!
You can pre-order Geektastic right now and get it in stores August 1, 2009.
