Caught by Surprise by the 2010 Geminid meteor shower:
I walked out on the porch on the ranch to enjoy the crisp early morning. It was 4 am and no moon was present. It was dark, cold and a perfect cloudless morning to look up at the stars and to dream a moment. Almost immediately a falling star caught my eye and it was quickly followed by another as the 2010 Geminid meteor shower entered the Earth's atmosphere.
When will the 2010 Geminid meteor shower peak?
The 2010 Geminid meteor shower will peak on December 14, 2010. The best time to catch the shower is after the moon sets, but be sure to dress warm. There have been powerful winter storms across the upper United States.
Where to watch the 2010 Geminid meteor shower?
If possible, escape the city lights to find the crystal clear skies with no artificial lights to compete with the amazing display of falling stars and meteors. Out on the ranch, there are no outdoor lights. I can stand on the porch and have a wonderful view of the sky. The stars sparkle like diamonds in the clear skies above the ranch. I am very fortunate to have the most wonderful place to enjoy stargazing. When a meteor shower sprinkles falling stars down from the heavens, it is unlike any place else on Earth. I had not realized that it was time for the 2010 Geminid meteor shower, but it soon made its presences known as I watched the falling stars rain down from the sky.
I will be getting up early tomorrow morning to again enjoy the peace and tranquility as I watch the peak of the 2010 Geminid meteor shower. The forecast for central New Mexico is clear but cold. Be sure to bundle up if you plan on stargazing during the meteor shower. This morning it was only 26 degrees, but even the cold cannot keep me indoors on the ranch during the early hours. I hope you can enjoy the 2010 Geminid meteor shower wherever you may be.
