General Mills Named "Best Company" for Multicultural Women
Working Mother Magazine's June Issue Features 2007's "Best Companies"
In the June issue of Working Mother, names and profiles of the 2007 Best Companies for Multicultural Women are featured, including stories on diversity in corporate America. GM is recognized in the issue for its comprehensive programs, as well as being among other "Best Companies" that are establishing groundbreaking diversity policies and programs to encourage the hiring and advancement of African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American and Native American women.
Kelly Baker is General Mills vice president of diversity. In her response to the announcement of GM being chosen again as a "Best Company," Baker said: "This honor speaks to the importance General Mills places on diversity, and on providing career growth opportunities to women of color. Not only do we seek exceptional talent from diverse groups, but we also strive to create a workplace where each employee can thrive."
Suzanne Riss is editor in chief of Working Mother magazine. In regard to why GM was chosen, she said: "General Mills is making a difference in the way corporate America views diversity and its multicultural employees. We have the good fortune to live in one of the most culturally rich countries in the world, and General Mills recognizes that this richness is a workplace asset. Harnessing the wealth of talents and perspectives that people of different backgrounds have to offer is helping General Mills excel in our increasingly global and competitive world."
To be considered for the "Best Companies" recognition, private and public companies in the U.S. complete a detailed application which includes 2006 data about hiring, pay and promotion of multicultural employees. The application questions also ask about the company's workforce profile, such as the number of women of color, women in top positions and top earners. Companies provide information about cultural awareness, including programs for women of color and manager behavior. Companies are considered for their diversity activities, child care, elder care and maternity leave. The press release says that this year the magazine gave the most weight to application questions about representation, recruitment and retention of women of color.
In the case of General Mills, Working Mother magazine specifically acknowledged the company for offering employees access to family, health, quality of life and mentoring resources at work, along with flexible work schedules. GM also offers on-site amenities, including a health clinic, a fitness center, a concierge service, banking services, dry cleaning, a grocery store, hot take-home dinners and an auto repair shop.
According to the press release, Working Mother magazine reaches about 3 million readers and is the only national magazine for career mothers.

Post a CommentI would like to see more companies allow mothers to bring their new babies to work with them or to provide onsite day care. A nursing mother has to pump and leave bottles at home while she is off earning. How much better if she could take some breaks at work to nurse naturally.
Good article. Based on previous articles, promotional campaigns and reports, this company seems to have a lot of diversity, which makes the listing less surprising. Congrats to General Mills.
