Generic Brands: How They Can Save You Money

Rebecca Graf
There are so many ways to save money. You can make lifestyle changes in your home. You can find ways to make things last longer. You could also look into buying generic products.

Generic products can be found in your grocery store, your electronic stores, and even your clothing store. They are everywhere. Shop at a discount store and the majority of products will be generic. These products are much cheaper than the name brands you find advertised on television on in magazines, but the trick is determining if they are cheaper also in quality.

Once upon a time a generic product could be found in white packaging with black lettering. There was a special aisle in the grocery store where you found them. The cost difference was astounding. There were many accounts of families who used only generic products. They would calculate their savings from buying the name brand products. This savings went into the bank. Dream homes were reported to have been bought thanks to generic products.

Today generic products are throughout the stores. The special aisle is long gone. You will find not just one generic can of green beans. You might find a couple all mixed in with the most popular of names. The green beans could cost $1.50 from a major company. The generic could be as little as $.35. This is a huge difference. This same price difference can be found in the yogurt, cereal, and dessert area.

With all these choices what is the best way to maneuver through the generic word? When is generic the right path to take? When should generic be avoided?

When you go to buy food, what stops you from buying generic? Is it a fear of wasting money? Are you afraid that it will taste bad? You might be surprised at how different generic foods are today. The best way to find your answer is to actually test the product. What have you got to lose? A few cents? If it tastes good, you will have saved money instead of wasting it.

Price your products well before buying. The generic might look like the best deal, but as with everything looks can be deceiving. Look at the price per ounce. There are times when stores and manufacturers run specials that actually bring the name brand products within a few cents of the generic or even lower. As a general rule, generic is the cheapest but never go in assuming that is the case. Always price the product and compare.

Try the generic macaroni and cheese once. It probably will not taste the same as the most popular brand, but the difference might be negligible. One test I always do is use a generic without telling my family. I watch their reactions and comments. If they do not complain or note that it tastes strange, I use it a few more times before telling them that I used a generic product. They are usually surprised and are not adverse to using it in the future.

You will find a few generic items that are not fit for human consumption. I will be honest about that. You will learn to avoid these, but do not let these bad experiences stop you from experimenting with other generics. Generic condensed soup, cereal, and ice cream are good ones to start with.

Now, let us go beyond the grocery store. There are generic electronics. You will find them in cell phones, televisions, and computers. The price differences are amazingly huge and get the consumers' attention. We all want to get more for our money so we are irresistibly drawn to these cheaper products. A computer is not a can of green beans. You might only loose a quarter or two if the generic beans turn out bad. What happens when the computer turns out bad? Now we are talking a couple of hundred dollars. Generic testing here is not a testing ground to tread lightly. Research your large purchases. Check out other consumers' experiences and note ratings on the products. Analysis your larger purchases and see if the generic is really an up and coming company or if it is just a cheaper product that is cheaply made.

Generic products could be your path to save money. Calculate what you save and put in a piggy bank. You will be amazed at how much the loose change will add up. But without purchasing generic wisely you could be losing money. Do not ignore the generic world for fear of wasting money. You might be missing a golden opportunity.
