Generosity

Peter Flom

Generosity breeds content
One rhythm beating in two hearts
The giver warms himself
Warming others with his heat.

Stinginess, though, breeds dissent.
Tearing whole into parts.
Glorifying the meanest self
Sucking at a milkless teat.

When asked, near death, where your years went
Where are the finishes of your starts
Be able to answer, to yourself
Your life was a wondrous feat.

The milk of human kindness is wonderful to drink and to share. We can always give something to others, even if it is only our presence.
