Genesis 1:2 '" the Face of the Waters

A Commentary on Genesis

Genesis 1:2 - The Face of the WatersGenesis 1:2 - the Spirit of Godwas hovering over the face of the waters

Genesis 1:1-2 (NKJV, emphasis added)

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

We have the phrases "the face of the deep" and "the face of the waters". Why is there a difference? The "deep" was a watery abyss. How much water was there is not specified, and therefore, unknown. The mass, the amount of matter (earth) is not specified, and therefore is unknown. However, God only created it once; therefore, it had to be enough to make all creation from.

Was the entire mass covered with water? Was the mass contiguous? It seems that the answer to both of these questions would be yes, though this is a lot of matter (earth) for our minds to envision being in one place. The gathering of which evolutionists and various "Christian compromise" hypotheses would say points to the hypothetical "Big Bang" as being in agreement with the Word of God. The only difference presently showing is that true evolutionists do not believe or accept the existence of anything beyond physical matter, and thereby must absolutely adhere to their a priori naturalistic/materialistic explanations, which necessarily excludes the operation of, influence of, and even the existence of God.

This leaves precariously qualified agreement with those Christians who would compromise between Biblical Creation and evolution. Compromising the Word of God with the word of men who do not believe in God; compromising Truth with untruth. Forcing the Word of God to accept and be changed by the explanations and beliefs of men whose beliefs and explanations defy and deny God; explanations which are not only anti-God, but at every step of their explanation also anti-science.

When truth is compromised, it is no longer truth. The Word of God is God's Word, and therefore not ours to compromise.

To further address those embracing the Gap Theory, we will look at Genesis 1:1-2 from the English translation of the Septuagint.

Genesis 1:1-2 (LXXE, Septuagint in English)

1 In the beginning God made the heaven and the earth.

2 But the earth was unsightly and unfurnished, and darkness was over the deep, and the Spirit of God moved over the water.

Instead of "without form and void", the Septuagint reads "unsightly and unfurnished". This seems to agree in plain reading with the idea that the creation of the "heaven and earth" was in process, and not yet finished, thereby being "without form and void" or "unsightly and unfurnished."

Notice that God had not yet pronounced the creation of "heaven and earth" good. This also argues for the creation of "heaven and earth" to be in process, and not having already occurred once, having been destroyed by Lucifer's Rebellion, and being remade (not recreated). Holy Scripture does not record, "In the beginning God created the heaven(s) and the earth. And God saw that the heaven(s) and earth were good." Had Scripture been recorded this way, strong credence would be given to the Gap Theory; but, Scripture is not recorded this way.

It deeply pains me that many people I look up to, admire and respect not only believe the Gap Theory, progressive creation and theistic evolution, but also teach it. As we continue through Genesis, and God willing, the rest of Scripture, we will continue to point out the violence these various beliefs do to the Word of God; and not only to the Word of God (which is most important), but also to the very teaching they do about the Word of God without them even seeming to realize it.

God bless these precious people, and all people as we strive and contend for a more pure faith in God, and deeper and purer understanding of His Truth.
