Genetic Damage to Sperm: Diabetis Affects Sperm

f.w.
Scientists from the Queens University in Belfast recently compared sperm from 27 type 1 diabetic and 29 non-diabetic men in their 30's. Researchers found unusually high levels of broken DNA in sperm samples from the diabetic men and have said that Diabetes causes genetic damage to a man's sperm and may affect his fertility.

Previous studies have suggested that defective sperm DNA can lead to male infirtility, pregnancy failure and miscarriages however, after these recent studies, the researchers looked at the DNA in sperm nuclei and found striking differences. More than half of the DNA ws fragmented in the sperm from diabetic men compared to 32 percent in healthy samples.

This is seen as a major breakthrough for infertile couples where the male is diabetic.
