Genetically Engineered Food in a Supermarket Near You

E.Tirratino
Genetically engineered food has managed to sneak its way into your home. The Food and Drug Administration does not require companies and manufacturers to state on labels whether or not food has been genetically engineered or altered. It is a common practice by these same companies to discredit concerns about the safety of such foods, as there is no proof that they can cause harm to consumers. However, it is just as important to point out that there is no proof that such food does not cause harm to consumers.

Mostly all of our staple food supplies such as wheat, corn, soy, & rice have been genetically engineered. That means that products made with these staples, (even sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup) stand a great chance of containing genetically engineered ingredients.

It should be major concern for children especially, who consume food that could be potentially dangerous to their health. Soy infant formula for example contains genetically engineered soy, & dairy infant formula contains the hormone rBGH.

Also, be aware of the seeds that you plant in your fruit and vegetable garden, companies have altered and 'patented' even the seeds of our food! When planting, opt for organic soil as well, and fertilize with home-made compost. Not only will you be sure about your produce, it's also a 'greener' approach as there is no packaging to discard, and causes no harm to the environment.

Consumers should be aware of what they are eating, so that they can exercise their options, and choose for themselves. Every person should have access to healthy nutritious food as nature intended.

Here are some things you can do if you are concerned about consuming genetically engineered food :

Buy Organic

Many supermarkets are offering organic foods due to higher demands and newly popularized 'green' efforts. Organic food is grown without pesticides and harmful hormones. Organic food is also non-genetically engineered.

Grow Your Own Fruit & Vegetables

It may be hard to find fruit & vegetable seeds that have not been genetically engineered. Here are some sites that carry non-genetically engineered seeds:

Buy rBGH Free Dairy

Organic millk & dairy products should be available at your local supermarket. They are usually labeled as organic, & be sure to check that the label also states that it is rBGH free. For infant formula, do the same. For more information on the dangers of the hormone rBGH in dairy, visit

Remember, if the label doesn't say "No Genetically Engineered Ingredients" or "No GMOs", chances are they're in there. Do your own research, & spread the word to your family & friends.
