Geocaching: A New Event Sweeping the World

Jeff Schuman
Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game where the participants go around the world looking for hidden containers, otherwise called geocaches or caches, anywhere in the world. There are currently over 350,000 caches placed in over 222 countries around the world. With the rise of this new event it is only natural that there be many new variations to the traditional game, and this article will tell about them.

Traditional: The traditional geocache is where the participants find a container with certain contains that are listed at certain coordinates.

Event Cache: Event caching is where geocachers gather for a one day event and certain for a cache that is temporarily placed in the location.

Night Cache: This is a different version of the traditional geocache where you search for the cache at night using reflectors and a flashlight to find the cache location. It is a harder version of geocaching and is not recommended for those new to geocaching.

GeoGraphing: This is similar to geocaching as participants look for a given location using GPS but rather than finding a cache the participant takes a picture. If you are looking to explore new lands and see amazing sights this is a most do event for you.

Locationless: In this variation a description will be given for something to find, such as a building. Once an object similar to the item described is found the finder will record the location with their GPS handheld receiver .

Multi-cache: This is the same as the traditional geocache, except there are multiple caches. Each cache will lead you to the next or final cache.

Mystery: This is a fun variation of geocaching for those who enjoy mysteries. Rather than a coordinate being inside a cache there will be a sort of puzzle that you must solve in order to receive the final coordinates.

Moving: This is very similar to the traditional geocaching. You find a cache in a certain location and rather than collect what is inside the cache and leave you add new items to the cache and move it to another location. This will essential turn you from a finder to a hider.

Offset: This is similar to the multi-cache variation except you do not find multiple caches. You will go to a cache that will give you the location of an item, like a plaque, that will give you the coordinates of the final cache with numbers, such as dates.

Those are just nine variations of the new popular, fun event, geocaching. If you have not done it yet it is a must do event.
