Geodon for Kids

My Nine Year Old's Experience with Geodon

Heather Shockney
Geodon is a mood stabilizer usually used as a treatment for Bi-polar. Recently though, psychiatrists have began to use it to treat mood disorders in kids. My daughter has been on Geodon for five months now and here is what our experience with Geodon has been thus far.

My daughter has PDD-NOS, ADHD, ODD, anxiety, and sensory issues. With all of these combined diagnoses she has a mood disorder problem. The doctor believes it is bipolar, but with her only being nine he didn't want to add another diagnosis to the list right now. Our reasons for having to use Geodon started when my daughter began having terrible raging fits.

She would be so happy and then become so angry in the matter of minutes. Anything could set her off. She would try and hurt herself by smacking her head off of the floor and the walls. She would hit herself and bite her arms. She would hit her father and myself. We did everything we could to try and stop the rages; it was like she was in another world at the time. We had no choice, we had to do something for her safety. This is when the doctor suggested Geodon.

We noticed a huge improvement shortly after beginning the Geodon. My daughter was slowly becoming a happier child. The rages were stopping. She would still get angry, but instead of hitting she would just use her words. Geodon has helped her to feel calmer and more stable. She will tell you how much better she feels since starting the Geodon.

Geodon also has not had any side effects that we have noticed. We have tried another mood stabilizer that caused weight gain. Geodon has not caused my daughter to gain any weight. She has actually lost the weight she gained while being on the other mood stabilizer.

If you are considering using Geodon to treat your child I would strongly recommend it. Geodon has been a miracle drug for our family. We can actually go places without the fear of a fit. I know some parents worry that medicines like Geodon will make their kid act like a zombie. This is far from it. My daughter still has all of the energy she had before beginning the Geodon. She just has an easier time controlling her anger.

We still see the cycles of happy and mad, but the mad times are no ways near as bad as they were before. I will take some mean comments any day over my daughter smacking her head into a door. Geodon is a great choice for treating kids that need a mood stabilizer.

Geodon may not have the same effect on your child as each person reacts different to medicines.

Most mood stabilizers can cause weight gain. Geodon does not have that side effect.

It is great to hear others say good things about Geodon. Normally all I read is bad stuff and then it makes you wonder if you are a bad parent putting your child on a medicine that has so many bad side effects. This article made me not feel like a bad parent. Thank you!!

We adopted two special needs children, both bipolar.we are worried about meds because they were born postive for drugs and to add more drugs to them is so scary,But their rages are more scary sometimes. Its hard when you dont know their whole istory.good luck with your family&thanks for your story.

Heather, I so hope this continues to work for her or that she outgrows the need for medication. It sounds like a heart wrenching situation.

Glad to hear this drug worked for your daughter. I know from my own family experience that sometimes medication is the best or only choice.

Thanks for adding your observations, Heather. I am so leery of medications for children that I can't decide what I would do if faced with the dilemma. glad to hear your daughter is doing well.
