George Carlin Dead at 71

Comedian George Carlin died Sunday at the age of 71. He had a long time problem with substance abuse and heart problems.

Carlin is best known for his controversial stand-up material. His social commentary made him an every man and made him very popular among the masses.

He gained most of his fame before I was even born, but I was instantly drawn into his comedic presence. His bit "Things That Piss Me Off" practically defined his career for me. He could make you laugh about things that you know shouldn't be funny, but they were.

He was recently selected by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to receive the Mark Twain Prize which is a lifetime achievement award for an outstanding comedian. It was only appropriate that he be selected as his career spanned decades and he touched the lives of several generations.

While he's most known for his comedy and he's appeared in several movies, to me, he will always be Rufus. I first saw Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure when I was a little kid. It was a staple in our house, and George was a big part of what made that movie work. His on screen presence and great one-liners were all a part of what he brought to the character.

The world was definitely a better place with him in it and he will be missed. Hopefully a new comedian will hit the scene and continue with the same controversial social commentary that was Carlin's style.

I know that I plan to sit down and watch some of his HBO comedy specials and movies that he starred in as my own personal tribute to him. George, wherever you are, I hope you "party on dude."

I work full time and don't have as much time as I'd like to write but I am trying to make more time for it again.  View profile
