George Lopez Stand Up Comedian

An Iconic American Dream

Ms. Marie
Mr. Lopez exemplifies the meaning of an American dream, a man who has shown that determination and a positive attitude can make a difference. This California born Mexican-American used his childhood mishaps to his advantage.

Abandoned by his mother, he was raised by a grandmother who did not give him all the attention that a growing child yearns for, however George Lopez chose not to live a life filled with self-pity. He did not let depression, self-hatred or anger direct his path. Instead, he used it to create a road to success and happiness.

He was born in 1961 a time when racial issues where unsettled, yet he went on to pursue a career in comedy, by the late 1980s George Lopez had succeeded, he was doing stand up gigs at clubs around the country using his upbringing and childhood as material for his comedy shows. But he didn't stop there he has taken every opportunity to push the American dream to its fullest potential, by the 1990s he appeared in films such as Fatal Instinct and Ski Patrol.

The George Lopez television show, a Latino series that he stars in, is partly based on his childhood experiences, which proves that one can and should use negative experiences in life to one's benefit. Although, Lopez may have been inspired by successful Latino's like Desi Arnez and Freddie Prinze he himself has become a positive influence to others.

When the Conan O'Brien show moved to TBS, Lopez Tonight was moved to another time slot; however, George Lopez welcomed O'Brien contrary to what many may have expected he was graceful and even made jokes about it. The media, so it seemed, appeared to sensationalize the whole thing, but George Lopez sent his own little message, Why You Crying (Pun intended, that is the title of his book).

Mr. Lopez gives real meaning to the saying, attitude is destiny, his spirit is wonderful and he understands the meaning living life to its fullest. He is a kidney transplant survivor and a voice for the National Kidney Foundation.

One of several honors he has received, he was named one of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America in 2005 by Time Magazine, only touches the surface of what an inspiration George Lopez is when it comes to the true meaning of living the American dream.

His success sends a message, his smile and jovial personality is contagious, and George Lopez proves that there is always hope even when life seems hopeless. Mr. Lopez, this author truly thanks you for all you have given, you have planted many seeds of hope for others, and your footprints are valuable.

I always wondered how the character for the grandma in his show came around.
